‘Een creatieve vrouw kan niet getrouwd zijn’, vond Charley Toorop (1891-1955). Als ze aan haar schilderijen werkte, ging ze daar volkomen in op. In deze biografie vertelt Wessel Krul op meeslepende wijze hoe Toorop haar veeleisende kunstenaarschap trachtte te verzoenen met haar even intense privéleven. Ze was moeder van drie kinderen, had door de jaren heen een reeks hartstochtelijke affaires en was bevriend met sleutelfiguren uit de kunst en literatuur – van Ter Braak, Marsman en Slauerhoff tot Mondriaan en Roland Holst.

De schilderijen van Charley Toorop zijn radicaal persoonlijk. Getekend door jeugdtrauma’s van moreel en fysiek geweld zocht ze haar waarheid in de verf. Wat ze schilderde waren geen realistische voorstellingen, maar dromen en visioenen: beelden vol emotionele lading, ongewone intensiteit en onverbloemde scherpte van waarneming.

Charley Toorop. Een schildersleven is een monument voor een vrouw die met niets minder dan haar volledige wezen schilderde. De kunstenares komt naar voren als de sterke, onafhankelijke vrouw die ze graag aan de buitenwereld toonde, maar het wordt ook duidelijk hoeveel twijfel, verwarring en zelfkwelling daarachter schuilgingen. Achter haar zelfverzekerde façade ging een diepere strijd schuil, die haar leven én werk tekende.

Wessel Krul is geboren 1950. Hij was hoogleraar moderne kunst- en cultuurgeschiedenis aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Hij publiceerde over een groot aantal onderwerpen uit de geschiedschrijving, kunstgeschiedenis en kunsttheorie van de achttiende tot de twintigste eeuw. Tevens verzorgde hij Nederlandse uitgaven van werk van Thomas Hobbes, Edmund Burke, G.E. Lessing, J.S. Mill en Arthur Danto. In 2018 verscheen zijn omvangrijke en veelgeprezen biografie Hannema, museumdirecteur. Over kunst en illusie.

He has been a bookseller, publisher, journalist writing for The Times, Telegraph, Wall Street Journal, Spectator, Guardian and since 1988 has run his own literary agency. He is President of the Biographers Club, sits on the board of Biographers International Organisation and is a Trustee of the Campaign for Freedom of Information. His books include the prize-winning Stalin’s Englishman: The Lives of Guy Burgess (2015) and the top ten Sunday Times bestsellers The Mountbattens: Their Lives and Loves (2019) and Traitor King: The Scandalous Exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (2021).

Jacques Bussillet is a French journalist and writer who saw his first motorcycle race when he was nine-years-old, and followed the Continental Circus as mechanic and helper. After studying journalism at university, he reported about Grand Prix motorcycle racing during the 1970s and ’80s for the leading weekly Moto Journal and the daily sport newspaper l’Equipe. He met and knew all the players of motorcycle racing and has kept in contact with this world. He has published around 20 books about motorcycle sport and champions.

Frederik Cryns was born in Antwerp, Belgium. He is Professor of Japanese History at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, Kyoto, Japan. He is the author of several bestselling books in Japanese on the early interaction of the Western world with Japan. In addition to his academic work, Frederik appears regularly on Japanese television history programmes and supervised the historical aspects of the television series Shōgun (2024).
