Despite his genius, Johnston’s career was marred by his fraught relationship with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis was critical of Johnston and his meddling undermined Johnston’s strategies and weakened the Southern war effort. As noted by his contemporary, General James Longstreet, Johnston’s talents for army command and campaign management were unparalleled, but he was denied the opportunities afforded to others. This book argues that with proper support and alignment of leadership, Johnston’s innovative strategies might have altered the course of the war.

Barnett Newman (1905–1970), a founding member of the abstract expressionist movement, was a contemporary of such figures as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still. He left behind only 118 finished paintings, six sculptures, and 83 acknowledged drawings, yet is often regarded as the greatest painter to have emerged after the Second World War. Barnett Newman is the definitive biography of a charismatic New Yorker who defied the rules and created an art of the sublime.

This landmark book features original research conducted over decades, using scores of interviews, oral histories, and previously unseen correspondence to paint a richly textured portrait of a creative sage who became an exemplar of the artist-citizen. Born in New York to Polish Jewish immigrant parents, he grandly aspired to involve himself in every detail of the city’s life. He was a crusader for the civil service, ran against La Guardia for mayor, worked as a teacher, wrote poetry, criticism, and manifestos, produced political plays, and promoted other artists—all before painting a mature work of his own in his early forties. He has been a bookseller, publisher, journalist writing for The Times, Telegraph, Wall Street Journal, Spectator, Guardian and since 1988 has run his own literary agency. He is President of the Biographers Club, sits on the board of Biographers International Organisation and is a Trustee of the Campaign for Freedom of Information. His books include the prize-winning Stalin’s Englishman: The Lives of Guy Burgess (2015) and the top ten Sunday Times bestsellers The Mountbattens: Their Lives and Loves (2019) and Traitor King: The Scandalous Exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (2021).

Jacques Bussillet is a French journalist and writer who saw his first motorcycle race when he was nine-years-old, and followed the Continental Circus as mechanic and helper. After studying journalism at university, he reported about Grand Prix motorcycle racing during the 1970s and ’80s for the leading weekly Moto Journal and the daily sport newspaper l’Equipe. He met and knew all the players of motorcycle racing and has kept in contact with this world. He has published around 20 books about motorcycle sport and champions.
