Blurb of the book on the history of the Melbourne Airport Tullamarine

Melbourne Airport, better known to locals as ‘Tullamarine’ or ‘Tulla’, was the first purpose-built Airport City in the world. Its facilities in 1970 were unsurpassed by any international airport – it had a golf course, hotel, conference centre, art gallery, cinema, bottle shop, exhibition centre, multiple bars and a VIP lounge, and a fine-dining restaurant headed by an executive chef on his way to being awarded three Michelin stars. These facilities were built into Tullamarine’s plan by its principal planner and protagonist, Bill Bradfield, the son of John Bradfield, famous as the chief engineer of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Today, Tullamarine remains cutting-edge, with new and expanding terminals, upgraded car parks, more efficient roads, a third runway recently approved and a rail link in the works.

Discover the story of Tullamarine, from its planning and opening to its modern status as a benchmark for all international Airport Cities.

Blurb of the book by Elizabeth Tynan on the biggest Atomic blast in Australia

Elizabeth Tynan’s landmark book on the history of British nuclear testing in Australia.

Nuclear Archipelago tells the shocking story of the two British atomic weapons test series held at Western Australia’s Monte Bello Islands in 1952 and 1956. Operation Hurricane and Operation Mosaic took place at a rugged archipelago 100 kilometres off the Pilbara coast, and each of the three bombs sent fallout over vast distances across the country. One of the tests, Mosaic G2 in June 1956, the largest nuclear weapon test ever held in Australia, sparked panic at the time that it had been a nuclear accident. In both the Mosaic tests, the crew of a British ship was deliberately positioned in the path of fallout. The biodiverse natural environment of the islands was left contaminated and has never been cleaned up.

The book explores the politics, the secrecy and the controversies, including the true nature of Mosaic G2 and its role in the clandestine development of the British hydrogen bomb.

Elizabeth Tynan is professor in the Graduate Research School at James Cook University, Townsville. She is a prominent writer and researcher of the era of British atomic testing in Australia. Her book Atomic Thunder: The Maralinga Story (NewSouth, 2016) won the Prime Minister’s Literary Award (Australian History) and the CHASS Australia Book Prize in 2017. Her follow-up book The Secret of Emu Field: Britain’s Forgotten Atomic Tests in Australia was published by NewSouth in 2022.

Blurb of the book by Joshua Black on Australian politicians and their Storytelling

In Performance Politics historian and speechwriter Joshua Black provides an eye-opening account of how Australian politicians have become experts at fashioning and refashioning stories about themselves, their lives, personal ambitions and political entanglements. Delving into memoirs, autobiographies, documentaries, media coverage, personal papers and original interviews, the book reveals how much of our recent political history has been delivered through the prism of the publishing house, the book launch, the documentary, and the lounge rooms where political retrospectives were broadcast. From a time when ‘telling tales out of school’ (as Billy Hughes once put it) was not the done thing, to one where the 2024 Nemesis documentary showcased backstabbing, character assassinations and high emotions.

Performance Politics shows how political life writing and documentary making has played an outsized role in creating the story-driven political culture of our times. Settling scores, shaping legacies and dramatising the democratic process, sometimes in shocking ways.

Joshua Black is a political historian, speechwriter, policy researcher and media adviser and co-editor of Gold Standard? Remembering the Hawke Government (NewSouth).

Andrew Bayliss is geboren in Australië.

Christopher Smee is geboren in Australie in 1972.
