In Dochter van de tarot van Clare Marchant vlucht de Italiaanse Portia in 1644 met haar baby Vittoria naar Londen, weg van haar gewelddadige echtgenoot. In het heden vertrekt Beatrice na de dood van haar moeder naar Londen om een tarotwinkel te beginnen. Ze stuit op een oude tarotset waarvan de Duivelkaart ontbreekt. Ze gaat op onderzoek uit en ontdekt dat de kaart gelinkt is aan een reeks moorden op vrouwen in het 17e-eeuwse Londen.
