Edward Kamau Brathwaite was born on May 11, 1930 in Bridgetown, Barbados. He was a Caribbean writer and critic who writes on the experience of black cultural life throughout the worldwide African diaspora. Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, Brathwaite was educated in Barbados and England and has received numerous awards for his poetry and cultural studies, including both Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellowships. He has been a professor of Comparative Literature at New York University since 1992 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Sussex in 2002. He died aged 89 on February 4, 2020 in Barbados.

Tonks died on April 15, 2014.

Sato Reang enjoys an idyllic childhood of soccer, cricket fighting, and mischief in his Indonesian village—until the day he must be circumcised, and his observant father forces him into a life of Islamic piety. Eka Kurniawan was born November 28, 1978 in West Java, Indonesia, on the day that the little ex-Portuguese colony East Timor declared its sovereign independence. which was to last just nine days before being annexed by Indonesia. The author of novels, short stories, essays, movie scripts, and graphic novels Eka Kurniawan has been described as “one of the few influential writers in Indonesia” (The Jakarta Post).

Minor Detail begins during the summer of 1949, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba–the catastrophe that led to the displacement and exile of some 700,000 people–and the Israelis celebrate as the War of Independence. Israeli soldiers murder an encampment of Bedouin in the Negev desert, and among their victims they capture a Palestinian teenager and they rape her, kill her, and bury her in the sand.

Many years later, in the near-present day, a young woman in Ramallah tries to uncover some of the details surrounding this particular rape and murder, and becomes fascinated to the point of obsession, not only because of the nature of the crime, but because it was committed exactly twenty-five years to the day before she was born. Adania Shibli masterfully overlays these two translucent narratives of exactly the same length to evoke a present forever haunted by the past.
