Toen Cesar Zuiderwijk in 1970 lid werd van Golden Earring, had Nederland plots zijn eigen drumheld. Zijn fantastische en onorthodoxe spel, zijn charisma en zijn soms gymnastische gekte maakten hem snel tot een eyecatcher. Golden Earring werd de grootste band van Nederland.

In de jaren 80 lanceerde Cesar het muzikale project Labyrinth, en hij opende zijn eigen drumschool. In 1992 hij kreeg het voor elkaar om 1000 drummers op de Maas in Rotterdam te laten spelen. Hij ging bovendien met zijn eigen programma het theater in. Aan de Earring kwam in 2021 door de ziekte van de dit jaar overleden gitarist George Kooymans een abrupt einde. Maar met de band Sloper, als jurylid van het uiterst populaire televisieprogramma The Tribute: Battle of the Bands, een nieuwe theatertour en de afscheidsconcerten in 2026 blijft de agenda van de drumlegende overvol.

Samen met muziekjournalist Jean-Paul Heck gingen ze langs bij talloze muzikale vrienden en de Hagenees beschrijft tot in detail zijn avonturen met de Earring en alle uitstapjes ernaast. In Driftin’ on a Memory: Celebrating Seventy Years of The Isley Brothers, Trenton Bailey tells the story of this groundbreaking musical act. The Isley Brothers began recording as a vocal trio consisting of the brothers O’Kelly Isley Jr., Rudolph Isley, and Ronald Isley in the 1950s. They have covered a wide range of genres, including gospel, doo-wop, rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, the Motown sound, funk, and disco, and their music has been sampled by numerous hip-hop artists. The Isley Brothers achieved their first hit, “Shout,” in 1959 and have reached the Billboard Hot 100 Songs chart with new music in six different decades, from the 1950s to the 2000s.

The brothers experienced their golden age from 1973 to 1983 with the addition of three younger brothers. With three instrumentalists, including composer and arranger Chris Jasper, The Isleys became a self-contained band and released a string of platinum albums. Over the years, The Isley Brothers have adapted the group, adding and losing members over time, but have always included a brother. Today, Ernie and Ronald Isley are still performing, keeping The Isley Brothers a household name and remaining a serious force in pop culture. The remarkable longevity of The Isley Brothers has solidified their status as one of America’s most influential musical groups.

Trenton Bailey is a historian from Memphis, Tennessee, who currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia. An honors graduate of Morehouse College, he earned his PhD in humanities with a concentration in African American studies from Clark Atlanta University. Bailey has taught courses in African history, African American history, world history, and funk music, specifically. He was coordinator for the Morehouse Oral History Project and has done extensive research on the history of Morehouse College. Bailey is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and various organizations related to Black American life and culture. He is author of Do You Remember? Celebrating Fifty Years of Earth, Wind & Fire, published by University Press of Mississippi.

Finding Mr. Perfect explores the romantic relationships between Korean men and women who were inspired by romantic Korean televisual depictions of Korean masculinity to travel to Korea as tourists.

Author Min Joo Lee argues that disparate racialized erotic desires of Korean pop culture fans, foreign tourists to Korea, Korean men, and the Korean nation converge to configure the interracial and transnational relationships between these tourists and Korean men. Lee observes how racial prejudices are developed and manifested through interracial and transnational intimate desires and encounters.

This book is the first to examine the interracial relationships between Hallyu tourists and Korean men. Furthermore, it is the first to analyze Korea as a popular romance tourist destination for heterosexual women. Finding Mr. Perfect illuminates South Korean popular culture’s transnational fandom and tourism as a global phenomenon where fantasies and realities converge to have a tangible impact on individual lives.

Min Joo Lee is an assistant professor in the Department of Asian Studies at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.
