John Lingan – Backbeats

John Lingan Backbeats review and information book with a history of rock and roll in fifteen drummers. Scribner will publish this book written by John Lingan, on November 11, 2025. Here you can read information about the content of the book, the author and the publication.

John Lingan Backbeats reviews

  • “With passion and deep knowledge, John Lingan weaves together the history of popular music via fifteen essays about pivotal drummers, musicians who were integral to moving music forward. The only moments I put this book down were to pause and listen to the perfect examples that Lingan, a drummer himself, cites as crucial moments in recordings. Someone told me that drummers are like baseball catchers; they call the game and see the whole field. Here we see and hear the music of our lives unfolding from that wide perspective.” (Bill Janovitz, author of Leon Russell: The Master of Space and Time’s Journey Through Rock & Roll History)
  • “While singers and guitar players soak up most of the spotlight, it’s the drummer in the back who shovels the coal and keeps the whole damn engine moving. In Backbeats John Lingan delivers an intelligent, heartfelt, and long-overdue tribute to the unsung heroes of modern music. Because let’s face it—if it ain’t got that swing, it don’t mean a thing.” (Brad Tolinski, coauthor of Play It Loud: An Epic History of the Style, Sound, and Revolution of the Electric Guitar)
  • “Fascinating reading…Loud but often overlooked, drummers get their due in this entertaining survey…Lingan does a terrific job explaining the technical aspects of drumming to a lay audience; this book is accessible to any rock fan, even ones who don’t know the difference between a snare and a tom.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Blurb book about fifteen famous rock and roll drummers

An electrifying journey through the history of rock and roll, told through the lives of fifteen iconic drummers and their percussion rivals—from John Bonham and Charlie Watts to Ringo Starr and Questlove.

Rock and roll thrives on rhythm, but the drummers who drive that pulse often stay in the shadows. In Backbeats, acclaimed music historian John Lingan brings these unsung heroes into the spotlight, delivering a fascinating journey through six decades of rock history.

Lingan’s deep research and vivid storytelling explores the lives of fifteen pathbreaking drummers and their fellow timekeepers—men and women who together laid down the beat of an era. From Bernard Purdie’s legendary work with Aretha Franklin to Dave Grohl’s funk- and punk-indebted swing for Nirvana, these drummers redefined what was possible in pop music. Iconic figures like Ringo Starr, whose inventive style transformed the Beatles, and Charlie Watts, the steady backbone of the Rolling Stones, take center stage. But Lingan doesn’t stop there—he also shines a light on groundbreaking, underappreciated talents like Maureen Tucker of The Velvet Underground, whose minimalist beats rewrote the rulebook, and Sam Lay, a pivotal figure in rock’s evolution from the blues.

Packed with insider stories and exclusive interviews—from Robert Plant’s reflections on Led Zeppelin’s legendary sessions to superstar recording engineer Steve Albini’s behind-the-scenes accounts—Backbeats offers an eye-opening glimpse into some of rock’s most unforgettable moments, including the seismic shift of Dylan going electric at Newport, James Brown’s explosive creation of funk in the late sixties, and the birth of LA thrash metal in the early eighties.

More than just a tribute to an unrecognized group of virtuosos, this book is a love letter to the art of drumming itself. Backbeats shows how these remarkable artists not only kept the beat but drove rock and roll forward. It’s a must-read for any music lover, offering a fresh and thrilling perspective on a story we only thought we knew.

John Lingan is the author of Backbeats: A History of Rock and Roll in Fifteen Drummers, Homeplace: A Southern Town, a Country Legend, and the Last Days of a Mountaintop Honky-Tonk; and A Song for Everyone: The Story of Creedence Clearwater Revival, named one of the Best Music Books of 2022 by Variety. • “Lee develops a powerful conceptual framework for understanding the racialized erotic desires that structure both Hallyu and tourism to Korea. Finding Mr. Perfect represents essential reading for all theorists of Korean media fandom, particularly those interested in its gendered and racial logics.” (Thomas Baudinette, author of Boys Love Media in Thailand)
  • “Lee interrogates how erotic desires rework Orientalist stereotypes, through analysis of K-drama masculinity scripts and conversations with female tourists and Korean men they meet. By exploring a ‘mutual gaze’ where both parties harbor racialized erotic expectations, Lee offers a compelling examination of desire, power, and transnational romance.” (Olga Fedorenko, Seoul National University)

Flaptekst van Min Joo Lee boek over Zuid-Korea

Finding Mr. Perfect explores the romantic relationships between Korean men and women who were inspired by romantic Korean televisual depictions of Korean masculinity to travel to Korea as tourists.

Author Min Joo Lee argues that disparate racialized erotic desires of Korean pop culture fans, foreign tourists to Korea, Korean men, and the Korean nation converge to configure the interracial and transnational relationships between these tourists and Korean men. Lee observes how racial prejudices are developed and manifested through interracial and transnational intimate desires and encounters.

This book is the first to examine the interracial relationships between Hallyu tourists and Korean men. Furthermore, it is the first to analyze Korea as a popular romance tourist destination for heterosexual women. Finding Mr. Perfect illuminates South Korean popular culture’s transnational fandom and tourism as a global phenomenon where fantasies and realities converge to have a tangible impact on individual lives.

Min Joo Lee is an assistant professor in the Department of Asian Studies at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.

Wie Paul McCartney zegt, zegt naast The Beatles natuurlijk ook Wings.

Blurb of the book about the Album Rumours by Fleetwood Mac

The insight to Fleetwood Mac’s iconic album Rumours, celebrating its story, mythology, and enduring impact.

On January 1, 1975, struggling young singer-songwriter Lindsey Buckingham was invited to join the veteran blues band Fleetwood Mac. He agreed on the condition that his girlfriend, an equally unknown vocalist named Stevie Nicks, also be included. Within two years, Rumours was born—and went on to become one of the most popular albums of all time.

Almost five decades later, it is the only classic rock record that still attracts young listeners and continues to top sales and streaming charts. In Don’t Stop, award-winning journalist and bestselling author Alan Light unravels the enduring allure of Fleetwood Mac’s monumental album. Since its 1977 release, Rumours has captivated generations with its unparalleled blend of romantic turmoil and musical genius. Light explores the album’s transformation from a pop phenomenon to a cultural touchstone, and its unique ability to remain relevant in today’s rapidly changing music scene.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with current artists inspired by Fleetwood Mac, as well as fans who have only recently discovered the album, Light investigates what keep Rumours at the forefront of popular culture, from Glee to Saturday Night Live to Daisy Jones & the Six. Through insightful analysis and storytelling, Don’t Stop celebrates the album’s trail blazing sound and diverse voices, and the emotional depth that continues to fascinate audiences. From the incredible soap opera behind the album’s creation to its embrace in the age of TikTok, this book presents a kaleidoscopic view of a landmark work that has transcended its time.

Cameron Crowe The Uncool reviews

  • “We know his voice: the journalist/adventurer, the cinematic novelist, and now with The Uncool the raconteur of his own literary self. He sculpts and weaves the events of his experience into scenes and language that often turn into something like a manifesto. He talks to us like he’s talking to us. Many centuries ago, he instructed me and Owen Wilson about an early cut of our unformed first film: ‘Your movie has a rock sensibility. Don’t fight it. It will serve you.’ On the screen (and stage) and on the page: his clarity of observation and memory, his choice words, his people—Cameron Crowe, wonderfully, continues to serve us.” (Wes Anderson)
  • “Cameron has written a book that feels like music, an intimate souvenir, like a song you can’t stop listening to.” (Stevie Nicks)
  • “A delicious tale of a devotee who worships at the altar of rock and roll. From the jittery reverence that comes with the first taste of backstage to the intimate thrill of the post-show motel room, this is a story for every kid who’s ever dreamed a dream and dared to watch it all come true. It’s about the friends you make and the memories that linger long after the credits roll. It’s a love letter to fandom, sealed with Cameron’s trademark sincerity and heart.” (Maggie Rogers)

Blurb of the memoir by Cameron Crowe

The long-awaited memoir by Cameron Crowe—one of America’s most iconic journalists and filmmakers—The Uncool is a joyful dispatch from a lost world, a chronicle of the real-life events that became Almost Famous, and a coming-of-age journey filled with music legends as you’ve never seen them before.

Cameron Crowe was an unlikely rock and roll insider. Born in 1957 to parents who strictly banned the genre from their house, he dove headfirst into the world of music. By the time he graduated high school at fifteen, Crowe was contributing to Rolling Stone. His parents became believers, uneasily allowing him to interview and tour with legends like Led Zeppelin; Lynyrd Skynyrd; Bob Dylan; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and Fleetwood Mac.

The Uncool offers a front-row ticket to the 1970s, a golden era for music and art when rock was young. There’s no such thing as a media junket—just the rare chance a young writer might be invited along for an adventure. Crowe spends his teens politely turning down the drugs and turning on his tape recorder. He talks his journalism teacher into giving him class credit for his road trip covering Led Zeppelin’s 1975 tour, which lands him—and the band—on the cover of Rolling Stone. He embeds with David Bowie as the sequestered genius transforms himself into a new persona: the Thin White Duke. Why did Bowie give Crowe such unprecedented access? “Because you’re young enough to be honest,” Bowie tells him.

Youth and humility are Crowe’s ticket into the Eagles’ dressing room in 1972, where Glenn Frey vows to keep the band together forever; to his first major interview with Kris Kristofferson; to earning the trust of icons like Gregg Allman and Joni Mitchell, who had sworn to never again speak to Rolling Stone. It’s a magical odyssey, the journey of a teenage writer waved through the door to find his fellow dreamers, music geeks, and lifelong community. It’s a path that leads him to writing and directing some of the most beloved films of the past forty years, from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Say Anything… to Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous. His movies often resonate with the music of the artists he first met as a journalist, including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Who, and Pearl Jam.

The Uncool is also a surprisingly intimate family drama. If you’ve seen Almost Famous, you may think you know this story—but you don’t. For the first time, Crowe opens up about his formative years in Palm Springs and pays tribute to his father, a decorated Army officer who taught him the irreplaceable value of the human voice. Crowe also offers a full portrait of his mother, whose singular spirit helped shape him into an unconventional visionary.

With its vivid snapshots of a bygone era and a celebration of creativity and connection, this memoir is an essential read for music lovers or anyone chasing their wildest dreams. At the end of that roller-coaster journey, you might just find what you were looking for: your place in the world.

Cameron Crowe was born July 13, 1957 in Palm Springs, California. He became Rolling Stone’s youngest-ever contributor as a fifteen-year-old high school graduate, going on to conduct all-time best interviews with the likes of Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Elton John, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and the Who. Crowe is also an acclaimed filmmaker who has written and directed films including Fast Times at Ridgemont HighSay Anything…SinglesJerry MaguireVanilla Sky, and Almost Famous (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay). He wrote the definitive book on the work of writer-director Billy Wilder, Conversations with Wilder. Crowe is currently at work on a film based on the life and music of Joni Mitchell. He has three children and lives in Southern California.

A chance remark on the stairs at Peter Morris Music in London’s Denmark Street, in October 1963, set off a chain reaction that helped Brian Epstein apply some much-needed leverage on America’s Hollywood-based Capitol label. Although February 1963 marked the Beatles’ breakthrough in Britain, by the closing months of that year they still had not conquered America. Their manager Brian Epstein had been fighting what seemed like a losing battle to persuade Capitol to release the band’s records in America. How did that chance encounter eventually force Capitol’s hand?

When the Beatles eventually hit the big time in the US in February 1964, both Epstein and Capitol executives obscured the true story behind it. However, corporate and personal archives now reveal the reality behind this and much more, also lifting the lid on the fact that Capitol viewed the British record industry as being 30 years behind the times, and set out to remix UK master tapes and create distinct US albums. While Capitol’s strategy made the Beatles rich beyond their wildest dreams, Epstein is shown as often struggling to balance Capitol’s commercial decisions against the Beatles’ own demands. This account also explores Capitol’s PR efforts to protect the Beatles image as they were caught up in the whirlwind of worldwide success.

Nando Boers is geboren in 1970 in Alkmaar.

Niels Graaf is geboren in 1991.

Steven Rings What Did You Hear? review en recensie

  • “Rings hears what others don’t–because as he listens, sounds spark thoughts. This takes him inside Bob Dylan’s songs, hearing how their elements–rhythms, melodies, words, and sounds–make what we hear as whole and finished. But that way of listening also takes Rings outside the songs, to hear what they hear: the musical gestures that have shaped them, that have spoken to them. In Rings’s pages, that conversation comes fully to life.” (Greil Marcus, auteur van Folk Music, A Bob Dylan Biography in Seven Songs)
  • What Did You Hear? sings like that Japan ’94 ‘Hard Rain, ‘ spotlighting not Dylan the songwriter but Dylan the performer. Through detailed argument and copious musical examples, Rings breaks down Dylan’s technique on his various instruments: voice, guitar, piano, harmonica. The sounds Dylan fans have loved for decades now have a conceptual framework, demonstrating just how much care Dylan puts into the delivery of his words, not just the writing of them. Rings knows his music theory but doesn’t rely on the reader to, making his analysis easily accessible for the layperson. The most intriguing Bob Dylan book I’ve read in some time.” (Ray Padgett, auteur van Pledging My Time, Conversations with Bob Dylan Band Members)

Discover a new side of the songs of Bob Dylan by exploring the virtues of rough sounds, peculiar intonation, and a raspy voice.

Folk troubadour, rock star, country crooner—for a musician who adopted so many personas, Bob Dylan always sounds like himself. While he’s written many of the most iconic and impactful lyrics of the past sixty years, Dylan’s music has also reshaped our sonic imagination with his ragged voice, wailing harmonica, and rough-hewn guitar.

Music theorist Steven Rings argues that such sonic imperfections are central to understanding Dylan’s songs and their appeal. These blemishes can invoke authenticity or persona, signal his social commitments, and betray his political shortcomings. Rings begins—where else?—with Dylan’s voice, exploring its changeability, its unmistakable features, and its ability to inhabit characters, including the female narrator of “House of the Rising Sun.” Rings then turns to Dylan as an instrumentalist, examining his infamous adoption of the electric guitar in 1965, as well as his stylistically varied acoustic playing, which borrows sounds and techniques from Black blues musicians, among other influences. Rings charts the histories audible in Dylan’s harmonica as well as piano, which has been central to his music making since his earliest days of imitating Little Richard in his hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota. Finally, Rings guides readers through one of Dylan’s most famous songs, “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall,” analyzing its musical sources as well as variations in live performances. A companion website of audio and video examples helps readers notice the nuances and idiosyncrasies inherent in Dylan’s work and, even more importantly, their effects.

A close look at an underdiscussed but essential aspect of Dylan’s oeuvre, What Did You Hear? offers a fresh understanding of a singular performer, his musical choices, and the meanings that we can hear in his imperfect sounds.

Steven Rings is associate professor in the Department of Music at the University of Chicago. He is the author of Tonality and Transformation and the coeditor of The Oxford Handbook of Critical Concepts in Music Theory.
