Byobu is an intimate work filled with poetry and knowledge, densely interwoven without pretension, born of a single force: curiosity. As a book, it’s representative of the modesty and complexity of Vitale’s poetic universe. Byobu (from the Japanese word byōbu meaning literally a ‘wind wall’, i.e. a folding screen) is the protagonist in this treatise on the senses comprised of thirty-three contemplative episodes and a final section of aphoristic thoughts. Bybou is less a physical character, than a spiritual one, a consciousness revealing its rich inner world, which is, in fact, driven by its meticulous attention to our rich outer world. The insights afforded the readers certainly lead them to see Byobu as a folding screen behind which resides his universe of behaviours, worries, curiosities, pleasures, peculiarities, and efforts to understand.

Ida Vitale (Uruguay, 1923) is a poet, translator, essayist, and literary critic. In 2018, she was just the fifth woman to receive the prestigious Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the highest recognition for literature in Spanish. In addition to the Cervantes Prize, she has also received the FIL Literature Prize (2018), Max Jacob Prize (2017), Federico García Lorca Poetry Prize (2016), Reina Sofía Poetry Prize (2015), Alfonse Reyes Prize (2014), and Octavio Paz Prize (2009), as well as many other honours, including being named by the BBC as one of the 100 most influential women of 2019.

‘The world is this house’, says Clara while she is trying to protect her beloved ones from the world – yes, that one outside their house walls – which seems to threaten them more and more. Clara entrenches herself with her father and her daughter Flor in a dark apartment that inevitably crumbles on them. The roof becomes their last recess of freedom. A caged bird is the only witness of Clara’s fear and resistance against those she thinks are trying to destroy her.

‘Are threats and pain external or inside our own bodies? Where is violence’s root? What are we afraid of? Is there a possibility to find a roof to finally being able to breathe? What are our umbilical cords?’. Fernanda Trías does not answer these questions – impossible for anyone – about instinct, civilization and taboos, instead she gives them shape and dives deep into them a with a grotesque and forceful history written with agility and a Kafkaesque sense of humour.

The Rooftop is a claustrophobic novel about freedom, and also about fear, violence, motherhood and loss.

De relatie tussen fictie en werkelijkheid is al sinds de oudheid onderwerp van literatuur. Maar waarschijnlijk toont geen enkele andere moderne auteur deze band met zoveel kracht en originaliteit als Juan Carlos Onetti in zijn romans, novellen en korte verhalen, een oeuvre, zo zou je zonder overdrijving kunnen stellen, dat bijna uitsluitend geschreven werd om de subtiele, gevarieerde manier te tonen waarop mensen, naast het echte leven, een parallel leven hebben gecreëerd uit woorden en beelden die evenzeer onwaar als overtuigende werkelijkheid zijn, en waarin ze hun toevlucht zoeken voor de rampen en beperkingen van het leven zoals het is.

Salinger, and which in parts recalls David Cronenberg’s or Anthony Burgess’s examination of violence in society, Mella takes us with him in this dizzying journey right into the centre of his own neurosis and obsessions, where fatality is skilfully turned into an absorbing experience and a meditation on love, relations, grief, art and beliefs.
