Škoda Octavia: The Story of a Czechoslovakian Automotive Icon.

Step into the remarkable history of Czechoslovakian car design through the lens of the Škoda Octavia – a rare Eastern European automobile that stood shoulder to shoulder with Western contemporaries like the Ford Anglia and Triumph Herald. First launched in 1959, the Octavia became a symbol of mass car ownership in Czechoslovakia, with over 360,000 units rolling off the production line.

Crafted from quality materials and engineered with precision, the Octavia quickly earned a reputation for reliability, economy, and performance, making it a trusted companion for countless families. Despite political obstacles, including interference from the Communist Party, Škoda’s engineers delivered a vehicle that not only met everyday needs but also made a mark in motorsport – claiming Monte Carlo Rally victories from 1961 to 1963.

Beyond the racetrack, the Octavia’s technical brilliance and durability cemented its place as a national icon. It continued to excel in domestic rallies, often outperforming formidable rivals like the Russian Lada. Richly illustrated with photographs, engineering drawings, and technical tables, the story offers an in-depth look at the Octavia’s design, political backdrop, and enduring legacy – an essential read for classic car enthusiasts and anyone captivated by Eastern European automotive heritage.

Flaptekst van het boek over de eerste generatie Land Rover Discovery

Discovering the Discovery: The Story Behind Land Rover’s Game-Changer.

Since its debut in 1989, the first generation Land Rover Discovery has become a beloved icon with a devoted global following. While many books offer buying advice, none have fully explored the why behind the Discovery–its creation, development journey, and the role it played in shaping Land Rover’s future.

The Discovery was more than just a new model–it was a turning point. In the early 1980s, Land Rover faced declining sales and rising competition from affordable, family-friendly 4x4s built by Japanese manufacturers. These vehicles borrowed the Range Rover’s concept but delivered it at a much lower price. Land Rover knew it needed a response–and fast.

The result was the Discovery: a bold, mid-market SUV developed under tight deadlines and with new internal processes. Launched in 1989, it hit the market with immediate success, becoming a European best-seller and revitalizing Land Rover’s position in the global automotive industry. It soon became a core part of the brand’s identity and laid the groundwork for today’s fifth-generation models.

James Taylor is the author of several dozen books on motoring history, for a number of different publishers. An expert on the post-war British motor industry, he has a special interest in the products of the Rover car company. He is a former editor of Land Rover Enthusiast magazine.

Flaptekst boek over de auto’s van het Zweedse Saab

This handy full-colour guide covers the complete history of Saab’s cars. Chapters cover each of Saab’s models, including the 93 and 96 saloons that enjoyed much success in rallying, the 95 station wagon and the striking Sonett sports cars. The SaabO caravan and the Formula Junior racing car built during this period are also presented.

More than a dozen years after the last cars rolled off the production lines in Trollhättan, Saab still commands a keen following among car enthusiasts around the world. During the 60 years of its existence, Saab became renowned for the aerodynamic design, technical innovation and sturdy construction of its cars, which famously appealed to individualists and creative thinkers.

This handy full-colour guide covers the complete history of Saab’s cars. The story begins with the ‘Ursaab’ prototype and the original 92, which went into production in 1949 as the company branched out from aircraft manufacture after the war; it continues through to the final second-generation 9-5 models in 2011, launched when the company was struggling to stay afloat.

Individual chapters are devoted to each of Saab’s models, including the 93 and 96 saloons, which enjoyed much success in rallying, the 95 station wagon and the striking Sonett sports cars. The SaabO caravan and the Formula Junior racing car that Saab built during this period are also presented.

These early models were followed by the larger 99 and the much-loved and highly successful 900 range. The book features detailed specifications for each version of these two models, including the first turbocharged variants, with which Saab has become synonymous. In 1985, the 9000 took the marque further upmarket and into partnership with Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo.

The guide continues into the 1990s and 2000s, when General Motors progressively took control of Saab’s automotive division. Its bestsellers during this period were its 9-3 and 9-5 ranges, based on GM platforms. Less well-known, especially in Europe, are its 9-4X and 9-7X all-wheel-drive models, not forgetting the 9-2X, a badge-engineered version of the Subaru Impreza. All these models are also presented.

Each chapter provides an introduction to the development and evolution of each model, as well as comprehensive technical information. Production numbers and dates are given, as well as details of limited editions. The book is extensively illustrated in full colour, with many archive photographs from Saab Automobile and the Saab Car Museum showing the cars’ interior and exterior design.

Flaptekst van het boek over de Trans-Am raceauto’s die streden Mustang en Camaro tussen 1866 en 1972

Tells the story of the Mustang and Camaro in Trans-Am racing, and the models’ competition records. Includes the histories of their competitors – Detroit’s ‘big four’ – and their commitment to achieving sales success through the Trans-Am series.

In April 1964, Ford’s Mustang pony car stormed onto the scene, igniting a sales phenomenon that forced Detroit’s other automakers to scramble to create their own competitors. Around the same time, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) was transforming from a purely amateur organisation into a professional racing powerhouse, introducing prize-money championships.

By 1966, the SCCA launched two landmark series: the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) and the Trans-American Sedan Championship (Trans-Am). While Can-Am focused on unlimited FIA Group 7 sports cars, Trans-Am catered to FIA Group 2 touring cars, with classes divided by engine sizes: up to 2000cc and 2001-5000cc. The Over-2000cc class was crafted specifically with the Mustang in mind, ensuring Ford’s interest and leveraging the growing pony car wars.

Chevrolet answered Ford’s Mustang with the launch of the Camaro in September 1966, sparking fierce competition on the track and in showrooms. Soon, Mercury, Pontiac, Dodge, Plymouth, and AMC joined the fray, turning the Trans-Am series into a battleground for Detroit’s ‘Big Four’. Manufacturers saw Trans-Am success as a path to dominance, investing heavily in developing race-ready cars and unleashing low-production homologation specials like the Mustang Boss 302, Camaro Z28, Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am, AMC Javelin Mark Donohue Edition, Dodge Challenger T/A, and Plymouth ’Cuda AAR—now some of the rarest and most valuable classic American cars.

Beyond the famous Mustang and Camaro rivalry, this book uncovers the untold stories of their challengers and the relentless pursuit of sales glory. Mercury nearly claimed the championship in 1967, and AMC triumphed in 1971 and 1972 with Penske Racing. The fierce competition left an indelible mark on American motorsport history.

A chapter also explores lesser-known contenders from outside the U.S., such as Ford Falcon Sprints in the British Saloon Car Championship and the powerful Holden Monaros and Ford Falcons that dominated Australian circuits.

This is more than just a tale of Mustang versus Camaro—it’s the story of an era when Detroit’s finest fought to conquer the track and the showroom floor, leaving a legacy of engineering brilliance and motorsport passion.

  • Discover the Genesis of the Pony Car Wars: Explore how Ford’s Mustang ignited a competitive frenzy among Detroit’s automakers, inspiring iconic rivals like Chevrolet’s Camaro, Pontiac’s Firebird, and more.
  • Uncover the Birth of Trans-Am Racing: Learn about the SCCA’s revolutionary Trans-American Sedan Championship, crafted to showcase pony cars in professional racing and capture the spirit of American motorsport.
  • Experience the Fierce Rivalries of Detroit’s Big Four: Follow the high-stakes battles between Ford, Chevrolet, Mercury, AMC, and others as they fought for glory on the track and dominance in the marketplace.
  • Celebrate the Iconic Homologation Specials: Delve into the stories behind rare, race-inspired legends like the Mustang Boss 302, Camaro Z28, and Plymouth ’Cuda AAR, now considered some of the most coveted classic cars.

Flaptekst boek over de Australische motorcoureur Jack Findlay

Jack Findlay: The fearless privateer who became the heart and soul of the legendary Continental Circus.

Among the heroic riders in the Continental Circus was an Australian named Jack Findlay, who became a role model for these modern gladiators mounted on two wheels. His talent and courage meant he was often referred to as the “best privateer in the world”.

For nearly 30 years, a group of daring motorcycle riders toured Europe, competing on perilous circuits. Driving small vans loaded with their racing motorcycles, they formed a nomadic spectacle that came to be known as the Continental Circus. While some riders gained fame through races that contributed to world championships, many remained unsung heroes. The 1969 movie Continental Circus celebrated these brave racers—individuals who risked their lives for the sheer love and passion of the sport.

Among these fearless riders was Australian Jack Findlay, a legendary figure who became a role model for the ‘modern gladiators’ of motorcycle racing. Known as the ‘best privateer in the world’, Findlay’s immense talent and unshakable determination set him apart as he competed against factory-backed superstars with far greater resources. He embodied the very spirit of the Continental Circus and all it stood for.

This book delves into Jack Findlay’s extraordinary journey, honouring a solitary yet immensely gifted and resilient rider who defined an era of motorcycle racing.

Jacques Bussillet is a French journalist and writer who saw his first motorcycle race when he was nine-years-old, and followed the Continental Circus as mechanic and helper. After studying journalism at university, he reported about Grand Prix motorcycle racing during the 1970s and ’80s for the leading weekly Moto Journal and the daily sport newspaper l’Equipe. He met and knew all the players of motorcycle racing and has kept in contact with this world. He has published around 20 books about motorcycle sport and champions.
