Karel van der Heijden (1826-1900) was de eerste militair en civiel gouverneur van Atjeh. Een selfmade militair, die het schopte tot luitenant-generaal van het Oost-Indische Leger (KNIL). Zijn bevorderingen en onderscheidingen verdiende hij vooral met controversiële militaire expedities in de Oost. Na een hard en meedogenloos optreden werd hij beschouwd als de overwinnaar van de Atjeh-oorlog. Van der Heijden ontving Militaire Willems-Ordes en kreeg van de koning verschillende onderscheidingen. Een uitgeschoten oog gaf hem het aureool van gewonde held, en de bijnaam ‘generaal Eenoog’.

In Nederland verzette hij zich tegen de beschuldigingen van wreedheden die hij te Atjeh zou hebben begaan. De discussies groeiden uit tot een nationale rel, pro en contra de generaal. In deze biografie duikt Van de Loo in het complexe en gelaagde Nederlandse koloniale verleden en reconstrueert ze het leven van de controversiële Karel van der Heijden.

Vilan van de Loo is op 15 november 1961 geboren in Eindhoven en is schrijfster, columniste en historisch onderzoeker. Zij studeerde aan de Universiteit Leiden Nederlandse taal en letterkunde en studeerde daar in 1993 cum laude in af in de richting Indische letterkunde. Inmiddels heeft ze ruim twintig boeken geschreven waarvan een flink gedeelte over de geschiedenis van Nederlands-Indië gaat.

De romancier Arthur van Schendel was een authentieke persoonlijkheid. Hij schuwde de publiciteit en liet buitenstaanders niet toe tot zijn privéleven. IJdelheid was hem ten enenmale vreemd. Niettemin trad hij met talrijke verhalen en romans, waaronder klassiekers als Een zwerver verliefd (1904), Het fregatschip Johanna Maria (1930), De Waterman (1933) en Een Hollandsch drama (1935), op de voorgrond en oogstte hij met zijn werk in binnen- en buitenland succes. Jarenlang stond Van Schendel in het midden van het culturele leven van zijn tijd. Tijdgenoten als Willem Witsen, Willem Kloos, Jan Toorop en Jan Greshoff maakten deel uit van zijn brede vriendenkring. Net als zij koos hij zijn gehele leven onvoorwaardelijk voor het kunstenaarschap. Menno ter Braak noemde hem ooit de troonopvolger van Louis Couperus.

Onveranderlijk zichzelf is een onthullend portret van de man die schuilging achter zijn boeken. Rob Groenewegen probeert hierin met behulp van veel onbekend feitenmateriaal antwoord te geven op de vraag wie de persoon Arthur van Schendel was.

Rob Groenewegen is geboren in 1960 in Rotterdam 1960, Hij studeerde Nederlandse taal en cultuur en legde zich toe op de bestudering van het interbellum. In 2008 bezorgde hij een vierde druk van Bed en wereld (1932), een novelle van de Rotterdamse schrijver en journalist Jo Otten (1901-1940). Drie jaar later promoveerde Groenewegen aan de Universiteit Leiden o.l.v. prof. dr. Jaap Goedegebuure op Ottens biografie, getiteld Te leven op duizend plaatsen. Van deze dissertatie verscheen een handelseditie (Haarlem 2011). Samen met Dirk Kroon stelde Groenewegen een bloemlezing samen uit de poëzie van Victor E. van Vriesland (1892-1974): Gekozen gedichten (2022). Diens biografie liet Groenewegen later volgen: Weerloos tegenover alles. Het leven van Victor E. van Vriesland (2023). Als redacteur was Groenewegen enkele jaren verbonden aan de Stichting Menno ter Braak.

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860) almost wasn’t one of the greatest philosophers of the nineteenth century. Jazz legend Cootie Williams left home to start his career as a professional musician at the age of fifteen. In 1940, after eleven years as one of the major soloists with the Duke Ellington orchestra, Williams was lured away to the band of Benny Goodman, one of the most popular bands in the country. At the time, it was a controversial move—it was still taboo for African Americans to share the bandstand with white people. Current references to the move usually reduce it to a song written by Raymond Scott, “When Cootie Left the Duke.” In reality, it was a seismic event. The Black press predicted Black bands would collapse from raids on their ranks. White musicians were afraid they would be put out of work. And the white press stirred up visions of Black musicians mixing with white women in the new landscape of integrated orchestras.

The twenty years trumpeter Williams spent as a band leader (1942-1962) have been covered in only the barest of details. His involvement in politics and the civil rights movement have not been detailed before. An astute talent scout, Williams and his band launched the careers of Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Earl “Bud” Powell, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and Pearl Bailey. He also was the first to record the music of a young Thelonious Monk, using two of Monk’s compositions (“Epistrophy” and “‘Round Midnight”) as theme songs for his band.

Steven C. Bowie respectfully tells Williams’s story, from his Alabama ancestry onward, including many new details rediscovered from the historical archives of the African American press and those gleaned from the author’s interviews with his friends and colleagues.

Steven C. Bowie curates and hosts the Duke Ellington-themed podcast Ellington Reflections. He has presented papers on Cootie Williams and Kenny Burrell for conferences held by the Duke Ellington Society of Sweden and written articles for DownBeat and Jazz Improv magazines.
