Hoe Nederlandse Joden, Spanje-strijders, Engeland-vaarders, spionnen en nazi’s in een Spaans concentratiekamp belandden – en het overleefden

Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog probeerden duizenden Nederlanders via Spanje de Duitse bezetters te ontvluchten. Een deel van hen werd op last van dictator Franco gearresteerd en kwam in het concentratiekamp van Miranda de Ebro terecht. Daar verbleven al landgenoten die in de Spaanse Burgeroorlog tegen de fascistische troepen hadden gestreden. Samen met gevangenen uit heel Europa moesten zij zien te overleven in de overvolle barakken. Voedsel en hygiënische voorzieningen waren er nauwelijks, ziektes en wandluizen des te meer.

Kamp Miranda vertelt het onbekende verhaal van deze Nederlanders, over hun verblijf in het kamp, maar ook over hun lange reis en wat hen na de vrijlating nog wachtte.

Zoals de zonen Zomerplaag en Meljado, die na een helse nachtelijke tocht over de Pyreneeën alsnog werden opgepakt. Of zoals Sake Visser, die twee jaar krijgsgevangene in Miranda was nadat hij als Internationaal Brigadist honderden makkers op het slagveld had zien sneuvelen. En zoals Louis van Coevorden, die er vastzat zonder te weten dat een groot deel van zijn familie in Auschwitz werd vermoord; bijna twintig jaar later zou hij een belangrijke rol spelen bij de ontvoering van nazi-kopstuk Adolf Eichmann in Argentinië.

Edwin Winkels is geboren in 1962 in Utrecht. Hij woont en werkt sinds 1988 in spanje, waar hij correspondent is (geweest) voor een groot aantal Nederlandse media, zoals nu al lange tijd voor het ad en de nos. Daarnaast was hij meer dan twintig jaar als verslaggever in dienst van de spaanse krant el periódico. Winkels heeft een twintigtal boeken schreven, zowel romans als non-fictie.

A definitive account of the formation and operation of the segregated all black US squadrons which served in the Second World War.

The Tuskegee airmen as they came to be called took their name from Tuskegee Institute (now University) where they were educated, which was located near Tuskegee Alabama. Many of these first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces came from states where blacks were still subject to the Jim Crow Laws. The American military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government and the Tuskegee Airmen were frequently subjected to discrimination, both within and outside of the army.

The book goes into much detail on decisions made and not made at the highest military and civilian levels in wartime Washington as to the founding, use and value of a racially-segregated all-Black fighter squadrons. In the end, a decision had to be between a Black squadron or no Black squadron at all. The resultant 99th Fighter Squadron and the follow-on 100th, 201st and 203rd squadrons were decisive in opening the way for full US military integration a full decade before America’s civilian society began to go the same way.

This account of these squadrons examines the background to their formation, their training and operations in theatre. The book is based on interviews with many of the Tuskegee Airmen themselves. This is supported by research in USAF archives. The work deals not just with the pilots and their warplanes in battle but also with their everyday life on air bases in the segregated Deep South and in the field in wartime Italy.

Stanley Sandler is a retired military historian who has taught at the college and university level in the U.S. and Canada. He has published numerous peer-reviewed books and articles on military, naval and air power history. His last active history position was as Assistant Command Historian at the U.S. Army Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He holds the B.A. (Houghton College) the M.A. (Columbia University) and the Ph. D. (Kings College, London University) where he studied under Sir Michael Howard.

This fully illustrated study examines the bloody battle between the US Army’s M18 tank destroyer and Germany’s formidable Panther tank at Arracourt in September 1944.

In response to Germany’s Blitzkrieg victories of 1939–41, the US Army created a dedicated tank-destroyer force intended to encircle and destroy the massed attacking armored divisions. Fast, relatively well-armed, but weakly armored, the M18 was designed from the start as a tank destroyer, unlike the M10 and M36. By September 1944, the German Army’s armored divisions fielded the Panther tank alongside the PzKpfw IV. In this book, William Hiestand notes that the Panther’s combination of long-range firepower, impressive armour, and good mobility won it a fearsome reputation, but shows how the M18 proved to be a very able opponent when the two types clashed on a foggy September morning during the battle of Arracourt.

Fully illustrated with specially commissioned artwork and mapping alongside archive photographs, this lively study examines the origins, development, strengths, and limitations of the two AFVs as well as their crews’ training, doctrine, and combat effectiveness. It also provides a detailed account of the momentous battle between the US 704th Tank Destroyer Battalion and the German Panzer-Brigade 113 at Arracourt, where the two types clashed in a surprising encounter that challenges our preconceptions about armored warfare in World War II.

William E. Hiestand has worked for over 30 years as a US Department of Defense analyst, focusing on military issues and serving in a wide variety of analytic, leadership and representational roles. He holds an MA in History from Cornell University, and has a lifelong interest in military history with a particular focus on 20th-century armoured and mechanized operations and Soviet military history. He lives in Virginia near Washington DC.

The cavalry ‘wings’ that probed ahead of the Roman Army played a key role in its campaigns of conquest, masking its marching flanks and seeking to encircle enemies in battle. However, the original small cavalry arm provided by the citizen nobility had proved inadequate before the end of the Republic, and Julius Caesar’s cavalry was largely made up of hired allies. During the Early Principate, the armies under Augustus continued in this vein, incorporating large numbers of non-citizen auxiliary cavalry units. The provinces came under increasing attack throughout and following the chaotic mid-3rd century, and Rome took lessons from its ‘barbarian’ enemies in how to improve its military mobility, adopting both new, heavily armoured shock cavalry and horse-archers, and vitally shaping the tactics employed during the Dominate.

In this engaging study, Roman Army expert M.C. Bishop charts how the cavalry grew to become the dominant force in Roman field armies by the twilight of the Western Empire. The most important task of any government remains the defence of its state and its citizens. Traditionally governments have used armed forces to do this. World events and comparative peace in Europe since 1989 have led most European governments to lose their focus on defence. However, recent events have proved that war is now as nasty, violent, destructive and prevalent as it has ever been, and governments need to fundamentally re-think their relationship with armies and soldiers.

History gives us several examples of states who have reconstructed their armies successfully, both on the field of battle but also in terms of how they relate to the state which it is their duty to protect. This book is about five armies who have adapted successfully: the 4th-century Roman army of Constantine the Great; the 15th-century Ottoman army of Sultan Mehmet II; Cromwell’s New Model Army of the English Civil War; the Prussian Army of the Napoleonic Wars; and the US Army of the Second World War.

Former senior military officer and renowned military historian Barney White-Spunner draws lessons from their experience to establish long-standing principles that are as relevant today as they were in the 4th century. It is a book about armies, their loyalties, their organisation and their souls.

Barney White-Spunner commanded British and allied troops on operations at every level from troop to division in Europe, Iraq, Afghanistan, in several African countries and in South Asia, was policy director in the Ministry of Defence during the 1997 defence review, commanded on operations within the US Army, restructured the British Army for Afghanistan in 2010 and commanded the British Field Army. As a military historian he has written Horse Guards (2006), the story of the British Household Cavalry; Of Living Valour (2015), the story of the soldiers who fought at Waterloo; Partition (2017), the story of Indian independence and the creation of Pakistan in 1947 which became an international bestseller and Berlin (2021), a biography of that fascinating city. He has also served as President of the Society for Army Historical Research.
