Hilary Mantel Wolf Hall recensie en review

  • “As soon as I opened the book I was gripped. I read it almost non-stop. When I did have to put it down, I was full of regret that the story was over, a regret I still feel. This is a wonderful and intelligently imagined retelling of a familiar tale from an unfamiliar angle.” (The Times)
  • “This is a beautiful and profoundly human book, a dark mirror held up to our own world. And the fact that its conclusion takes place after the curtain has fallen only proves that Hilary Mantel is one of our bravest as well as our most brilliant writers.” (Olivia Laing, Observer)
  • “Terrifying. It is a world of marvels. But it is also a world of horrors, where screams are commonplace. A feast.” (Daily Telegraph)

England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

Hilary Mantel was born 6 July 1952 in Glossop, Derbyshire, Engeland. She is the author of the bestselling novel Wolf Hall and its Hilary Mantel Wolf Hall historical novel about Thomas Cromwell Booker Prize 2012sequel, Bring Up the Bodies, which both won the Booker Prize. The final novel of the Wolf Hall trilogy, The Mirror & the Light, debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and won world-wide critical acclaim. Mantel wrote seventeen celebrated books, including the memoir Giving Up the Ghost, and she was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, the Walter Scott Prize, the Costa Book Award, the Hawthornden Prize, and many other accolades. In 2014, Mantel was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She died at age seventy 22 September 2022 in Exeter, Devon, England.

Since 1066, there have been more than forty kings and queens of Britain (give or take a Cromwell, Scotland not included). They are a dazzling cast of characters, and we routinely debate over who deserves the title of greatest ruler in our long history. From William the Conqueror to Henry V, Elizabeth I, Victoria and latterly Elizabeth II – their lives tell the story of our nation.

But how exactly do you measure a monarch?

Measuring Monarchy provides a completely original outlook as to how to analyse British kings and queens and throws a revisionist Molotov cocktail into our historical thinking. It puts forward and explains the case for five comparative metrics for all UK monarchs: their professional standing, their popular standing with the public, their impact on public finances, how they conducted foreign policy and their preparations for succession.

Tim Hames casts a forensic eye over fifteen key kings and queens, determining whether their status has been overrated or underrated. What is revealed may surprise you, and some overlooked monarchs are returned to their rightful standing.

Tim Hames began his career as an academic, lecturing in Politics at Oxford University, before moving into journalism as an Assistant Editor and political columnist for The Times. He has published widely. More recently, he has been the co-author (with Dame Kate Bingham) of the Sunday Times Business Bestseller The Long Shot: The Inside Story of the Race to Vaccinate Britain. He is the co-founder of Acuti Associates, a geopolitical consulting firm, and in that light he is the author of Trump II: Why He Won. What It Means For The World.

Cornwall’s storytelling tradition stretches back a thousand years. Before TV and radio, stories were told among the flickering shadows at the fireside. They whiled away the travellers’ miles, long hours in the fields, and days at sea. They gladdened brief moments of relaxation for miners and bal-maidens. Travelling storytellers wandered from village to village swapping words for supper, and a rich local dialect brought the tales to life. Classic Cornish tales such as the Mermaid of Zennor and Jan Tregeagle are wonderfully entertaining, and collectively tell us much about Cornwall, its people, and its history.

Join accomplished storyteller, scholar and writer Mike O’Connor as he explores the ‘when, where, and why’ of Cornish folk tales and celebrates the rich traditions and cultural legacy of hwedhlow.

Mike O’Connor is a powerful and engaging storyteller who performs at many events across the country. An important researcher into Cornish music and folklore, he has been awarded the OBE and made a bard of the Gorsedh of Kernow.

Heather Blurton Richard the Lionheart review en recensie

  • “Heather Blurton takes her reader on an enthralling journey through Richard the Lionheart’s many lives. She is a lyrical and sure-footed guide to this most mercurial of medieval figures whose image and reputation, as Blurton incisively shows, were being crafted even in his own short lifetime.” (Anthony Bale, Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature, University of Cambridge)
  • “Richard the Lionheart’s legendary legacies have never been explored more lucidly than in Heather Blurton’s account of England’s most absent and most mythic monarch. Blurton deftly weaves together a history of fact-framing and fiction-making from medieval chronicles to contemporary Robin Hood films. This book is compelling, insightful, deeply researched, and lively with instances of history stranger than fiction, and fiction imbued with history, making medieval lives matter in ever-evolving ways to those that read them.” (Christine Chism, Professor of English, UCLA)

Flaptekst van het boek over koning Richard I Leeuwenhart

The life of Richard I through the captivating stories told about him.

How did Richard the Lionheart, who once said he would sell London if he found a buyer, become celebrated as the ideal of English chivalry? This book examines the life of Richard I (1157–1199) through the captivating stories told about him, from accounts of his deeds in medieval sources to his portrayals in modern literature and media. Tales of Richard’s exploits were as colourful as they were varied, ranging from him wielding King Arthur’s sword to being a son of the Devil or even a cannibal. Instead of separating fact from fiction, this book explores how these tales shaped his legacy in both his time and ours.

Heather Blurton is Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her books include Inventing William of Norwich: Thomas of Monmouth, Antisemitism, and Literary Culture, 1150–1200 (2022).

Scotland’s ‘Stone of Destiny’ is the most famous symbol of both Scottish nationhood and the British monarchy.

Nick Aitchison has produced the first fully researched and illustrated study of its history, mythology and cultural significance. Having first traced the origin, evolution and function of myths surrounding the Stone and the ancient prophecy that gives the Stone its name, he examines the stone itself and for the first time reveals the Stone’s original function and the origins of its symbolic sanctity.

The Stone’s historic contexts and its role in royal inauguration and coronation rituals are also discussed, including an analysis of the rich symbolism surrounding the Stone and its changing nature over time. The book concludes with a discussion of the Stone’s symbolic significance with the creation of the Scottish parliament.

Nick Aitchison took his degree (in Archaeology and Scottish History) at the University of Glasgow, where he also gained his PhD. His research interests focus on kingship and royal and religious centres in early medieval Scotland. His previous publications include Forteviot: a Pictish and Scottish Royal Centre and the critically-acclaimed Macbeth: Man and Myth. Dr Aitchison is currently conducting research on early medieval Scone, its environs and associated royal centres.

The author of The Boleyns examines the lives and times of three of Henry VIII’s ‘other’ women – his mother and two sisters.

Henry VIII’s relationships with women in his adult life were not plain sailing. He was the Tudor king who had six wives, two of whom he murdered. But what of the three powerful Tudor women who surrounded Henry VIII in his early life? The ones who knew him before the marriages, before the beheadings, before the tyranny?

One was Queen of England, one was Queen of Scotland and the other was Queen of France – but for Henry VIII these women were his mother and sisters. Henry’s Roses explores the lives of these three women, telling the story of how their fate was entwined with that of the most infamous monarch of them all.

Amanda Harvey Purse is an author and historical researcher for London-based museums. She has spent the last twenty-five years studying the Victorian period and is a member of The Royal Historical Society. She has studied the Tudors at the University of Roehampton and is the founder of Tudor Secrets and Myths.

A celebration of Brighton’s individual and often strange history – from eccentric characters to odd events and places.

Brighton and Hove is one of England’s most recent cities and also one of its most colourful and eccentric. It developed as a fashionable resort in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, becoming inextricably linked with the extravagant behaviour of George IV and his fantastical Pavilion. In this book author Christopher Horlock delves into lesser-known but fascinating tales from Brighton’s past. Readers will find stories of the man who walked round the world wearing a medieval iron helmet, a shark attack straight out of the film Jaws, the time Brighton built its own version of Nelson’s Column, plus when the streets were full of hundreds of marauding zombies. And it also includes that notorious naked bike ride that takes place each year.

Quirky Brighton celebrates the unusual and bizarre history of the town and its characters over the years. This fascinating insight into Brighton (and occasionally Hove) will interest all those who want to know more about its curious history.

Christopher Horlock is an author and avid collector of old photographs of Brighton. He writes regularly for ‘Sussex Life’ magazine and has previously written history books for a local publisher as well Amberley.

This beautifully photographed selection of fifty of the Isle of Wight’s most precious assets shows what makes it such a popular destination.

Lying just a few miles off the Hampshire coast, the Isle of Wight is famous for its attractive landscape and historical connections. Its coastal scenery is varied, dotted with towns and fortifications built through the centuries to repel invaders, with a chalk downland spine to the island. Carisbrooke Castle held King Charles I during the English Civil War and royal connections continued with Queen Victoria, who made her home on the island at Osborne House. Other eminent Victorians followed including the poet Tennyson and the island became popular with tourists and holidaymakers. Cowes became synonymous with yacht racing and other attractions have been developed in the last century. Marconi sent the world’s very first wireless transmission from the Needles Park while the nearby Needles Battery became the testing site for Britain’s independent rocket-building programme in the 1960s.

50 Gems of the Isle of Wight explores the many places and their history that make this unique island so special, including natural features, towns and villages, buildings and places of historical interest. Alongside justly famous attractions, others will be relatively unknown but all have an interesting story to tell.

Andrew Powell-Thomas writes about military history, local heritage and children’s fiction books, regularly speaking at events, libraries, schools and literary festivals across the South-West. He lives in Somerset with his wife and two young sons and with more books and events planned.
