Frank Sinatra Jr. was born on January 10, 1944, in Jersey City, the son of famous singer Frank Sinatra and Nancy Barbota. He was active as a singer, conductor, and actor. In 1963, he was kidnapped by a gang led by Barry Keenan and held captive in a hotel in Stateline, Nevada. After his father paid the kidnappers a $240,000 ransom, he was released two days later. On March 16, 2016, Frank Sinatra Jr. died in a Daytona Beach hospital from a heart attack he had suffered earlier. He was 72 years old.

Most have some sense of what he did, that it was momentous, a great achievement, an act of primacy. But was his achievement “great” because he “discovered America” and thus made possible the hemisphere’s “great” nations? Or was it an apocalyptic catastrophe for tens of millions of Indigenous and African peoples?

In The Nine Lives of Christopher Columbus, acclaimed historian Matthew Restall, perhaps the leading scholar of the Spanish Empire, presents a new, authoritative biography of Columbus, while at the same time tracing his many afterlives down into our own time. He explores the mysteries, many of them manufactured, that color our understanding of Columbus even in the twenty-first century—mysteries surrounding Columbus’s name, nationality, place of birth, ancestry, education, religion, intellectual vision, moral fiber, sexual proclivities, and current resting place. He shows how Columbus became an iconic American hero in the nineteenth century, and how a parallel hero emerged in the form of the Italian American Columbus.

Restall takes us beyond polemic, sifting through the evidence across nations, languages, and five centuries to explore the many questions that make up what he calls “Columbiana.” He demonstrates that, far from a uniquely talented individual, Columbus was typical of the Iberian and northern Italian men of his day—a merchant mariner who became an explorer, slave-trader, and conquistador-settler. And Restall challenges the notion, deeply held to this day, that Columbus can be credited or blamed for all that happened after 1492.

In 2016 verscheen zijn goed ontvangen oorlogsgeschiedenis Rijpstra’s ondergang. Aan de biografie van Darja Collin werkte hij zeven jaar.

‘Aanname op gezag is de vloek der mensheid’, was haar lijfspreuk. Wilhelmina Drucker (1847-1925) was een van de eerste Nederlandse feministen en medeoprichtster van de vrouwenbeweging. Ze stelde de veroordeling van vrouwen tot het moederschap aan de kaak, net als de ondergeschiktheid van getrouwde vrouwen en de dubbele seksuele moraal. Minstens zo belangrijk was haar strijd voor het recht van vrouwen op betaald werk en vrouwenkiesrecht.

Van de vrouwen die de eerste feministische golf teweegbrachten, zijn Wilhelmina Drucker en Aletta Jacobs het bekendst. Drucker dankt die bekendheid vooral aan de actiegroep Dolle Mina, die in de jaren zeventig van de twintigste eeuw dermate spraakmakend was dat ‘dolle mina’ het synoniem werd voor feministe.

Eigenzinnig als ze was verdedigde Wilhelmina Drucker nooit de gevestigde orde. Ze koos altijd de oppositie en keerde zich tegen religieuze en wereldse autoriteiten. Als vrijdenkster en vredesactiviste nam ze deel aan het publieke debat over tal van parlementair-politieke en economische kwesties. Toen Pieter Jelles Troelstra en Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis het land toespraken, ging Wilhelmina Drucker met hen in gesprek, hoewel ze hen vaker tegensprak. En soms praatte ze er dwars doorheen.

In Wilhelmina Drucker herschrijft Marianne Braun een hoofdstuk uit de vaderlandse geschiedenis, met Drucker als lang onderbelicht gebleven hoofdpersoon.

Marianne Braun is historica, politicologe en neerlandica. Ze promoveerde op De prijs van de liefde, over de eerste feministische golf en het huwelijksrecht. Verder publiceerde ze tientallen artikelen over uiteenlopende aspecten van de vrouwenbeweging, het vrouwenkiesrecht en de cultuurgeschiedenis van de late negentiende eeuw.

De opkomst van het socialisme in Nederland is verbonden met de namen Domela Nieuwenhuis en Troelstra. Er was echter nog iemand in het spel: Vitus Bruinsma. Ook hij had een eigen partij en genoot nationale bekendheid, maar verdween door ziekte al vroeg van het toneel en werd vergeten.

Vrijdenker Bruinsma, in 1850 geboren in de betere burgerij van Leeuwarden, manifesteerde zich op allerlei gebieden: bestrijding van kwakzalverij, steun aan Multatuli, strijd voor hervormingen in onderwijs en landbouw, popularisering van moderne wetenschap. Ook zijn privéleven was opvallend: hij verliet zijn vrouw en ging samenwonen met schrijfster en feministe Frederike van Uildriks.

Bert Koene is als fysicus werkzaam geweest in diverse onderzoeksinstellingen, laatstelijk in het versnellerinstituut CERN. Sinds zijn pensionering houdt hij zich voornamelijk bezig met geschiedkundig onderzoek. Hij publiceerde diverse biografieën.
