Biografie van de grondlegger van de democratie in Nederland. Radicale democratie vertelt voor het eerst het spectaculaire levensverhaal van Pieter Vreede (1750-1837), de grondlegger van de democratie in Nederland.

Eeuwenlang gold democratie als een gevaarlijke regeringsvorm. Dat veranderde eind achttiende eeuw, toen radicale revolutionairen in Nederland streden voor vrijheid, gelijkheid en volksinvloed. Pieter Vreede, een Leidse schrijver en wolfabrikant, was de leider van deze radicale beweging.

Als aanvoerder van de patriottenbeweging in Holland leidde hij het verzet tegen de Oranjes en conservatieve regenten. Later streed hij vanuit Tilburg met succes voor de politieke zelfstandigheid van Brabant. In 1798 pleegde hij een staatsgreep die de weg vrijmaakte voor de eerste Nederlandse grondwet. Deze Staatsregeling vormt nog altijd een democratisch hoogtepunt in de Nederlandse geschiedenis.

Ideeëngeschiedenis van democratisch denken. Met zijn ideeën over volksinvloed en de afschaffing van de slavernij was hij zijn tijd ver vooruit. Door zijn vlijmscherpe pen en politieke behendigheid groeide Pieter Vreede uit tot een van de invloedrijkste én meest omstreden figuren uit deze periode. Zijn achterban zag hem als de belichaming van de revolutionaire idealen, zijn tegenstanders vergeleken hem met Robespierre.

Gebaseerd op grondig bronnenonderzoek is Radicale democratie zowel een biografie van Pieter Vreede als een ideeëngeschiedenis van het democratisch denken aan het einde van de achttiende eeuw.

Dirk Alkemade studeerde geschiedenis in Amsterdam en Berlijn. In 2020 kreeg hij een Fulbright Scholarship toegekend. Momenteel is hij als historicus verbonden aan de Universiteit Leiden. Radicale democratie is gebaseerd op zijn proefschrift dat hij daar in 2025 verdedigde.

Zowel in goede als slechte tijden is er behoefte aan perspectief en houvast. In een vloeiende stijl tekent Henri Beunders de tijdgeest. Hij brengt bekende en onbekende markante personages met hun ideeën op een beeldende manier tot leven.

Henri Beunders is geboren in 1953 in Emmeloord, Flevoland. Hij is historicus en emeritus hoogleraar Ontwikkelingen in de Publieke Opinie aan de Erasmus Universiteit. Auteur van vele boeken en nog meer essays en columns.
