She won countless awards, was made an an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and in 1993 was given an OBE. She died at the age of 88 on 13 April 2006 in Oliveto, Tuscany, Italy and was buried at the Cemetery of Sant’Andrea Apostolo, Civitella in Val di Chiana.

David Grieg is born in 1969 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a Scottish playwright who studied Drama and English at Bristol University. Since setting up the Suspect Culture theatre company in the 1990s, his plays have been performed widely in Scotland and around the world, including Midsummer, The Events, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Local Hero, and The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart. He is currently the Artistic Director at Edinburgh’s Lyceum Theatre. The Book of I is his first novel.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) is famed for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but he published many other novels and stories before his death at forty-four. Despite lifelong ill health, he had immense vitality; Mark Twain said his eyes burned with “smoldering rich fire.” Born in Edinburgh to a family of lighthouse engineers, Stevenson set many stories in Scotland but sought travel and adventure in a life as romantic as his novels. “I loved a ship,” he wrote, “as a man loves burgundy or daybreak.” The adventures were shared with his free-spirited American wife, Fanny, with whom he moved to the South Pacific.

Samoan friends named Stevenson “Storyteller.” Reading, he said, “should be absorbing and voluptuous; we should gloat over a book, be rapt clean out of ourselves.” His own books have been translated into dozens of languages. Jorge Luis Borges called his stories “one of the forms of happiness,” and other modernist masters as various as Proust, Nabokov, and Calvino have paid tribute to his greatness as a literary artist.

In Storyteller, Leo Damrosch brings to life an unforgettable personality, illuminated by many who knew Stevenson well and drawing from thousands of the writer’s letters in his many voices and moods—playful, imaginative, at times tragic.

Leo Damrosch is the Ernest Bernbaum Professor of Literature Emeritus at Harvard University. His many books include Jean-Jacques Rousseau: Restless Genius (National Book Award finalist); Adventurer: The Life and Times of Giacomo Casanova, The Club: Johnson, Boswell, and the Friends Who Shaped an Age and Jonathan Swift: His Life and His World (National Book Critics Circle Award winner, Pulitzer Prize finalist). He lives in Newton, MA.

Wat voor soort taal is Keltisch?

Van oorsprong is het Keltisch een talengroep die gerekend wordt tot de Indo-Europese talen. Alhoewel de Kelten vaak geassocieerd worden met het wat we nu het gebied van Engeland, Schotland, Wales, Ierland en Betragne noemen, bewoonden de stammen een veel groter deel van Europa. In grote delen van het westen van het Iberisch schiereiland in wat nu Portugal en Spanje is werd een vorm van Keltisch gesproken, net als in grote delen van Centraal- en West-Europa, inclusief het huidige België en het zuiden van Nederland.

Welke Keltische talen worden er gesproken?

Inmiddels is het Keltisch als levende taal in grote delen van het oorspronkelijke gebied uitgestorven. Om precies te zijn wordt in het uiterste zuidwesten van Engeland, in Cornwall nog Cornisch gesproken. In Wales het Welsh of Kymrisch en in Schotland het Gaelisch, ook wel Schots genoemd. Op het eiland Man werd tot in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw Manx gesproken. Het uiterste westen van Ierland wordt het Iers of Gaeilge de Keltische taal die nog enigszins levend is. Op het Europese vasteland in het uiterste westen van Frankrijk, in Bretagne om precies te zijn, het Bretoens of Brezhoneg de Keltische taal die door een deel van de bevolking gesproken wordt.

Following the sad death of Stuart Baker, the creator of Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland, in 2020, we were fortunate that another fine railway cartographer, Joe Brown, agreed to complete the work that Stuart had begun, to revise what became the 15th edition. However, the railway network of Great Britain and Ireland is always changing and never static and revised editions of this atlas are required on a regular basis; the rebuilding of the line from Oxford towards Cambridge and the reinstatement of the Foynes branch in Ireland being examples of some of the additions to this new edition.

Fortunately, Joe Brown has agreed to take on this work and this 16th edition will be the first one to be fully edited and revised by him. As with all the previous editions, the Atlas has been fully revised and updated whilst retaining the convenient format of mapping where each page overlaps with that on adjoining pages to make it easier to follow a long-distance route. Where appropriate, additional detailed inset maps have been drawn to show the complex railway developments in metropolitan areas such as Nottingham and Manchester.

While some minor changes to the layout have been made, Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland remains true to the standards of clarity and accuracy which were the hallmarks of its creator that have made the Atlas an essential work of reference for both railway professionals and enthusiasts since it was first published in the 1970s.
