Jerome Charyn is born on 13 May 1937 in New York City. He is the author of more than fifty works of fiction and nonfiction, including Maria La Divina; Ravage & Son; Sergeant Salinger; Cesare: A Novel of War-Torn Berlin; In the Shadow of King Saul: Essays on Silence and Song; Jerzy: A Novel; and A Loaded Gun: Emily Dickinson for the 21st Century. Among other honors, his work has been longlisted for the Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award and PEN Award for Biography, shortlisted for the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Award, and selected as a finalist for the Firecracker Award and PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Film Culture at the American University of Paris, Charyn has also been named a Commander of Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture and received a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He lives in Manhattan.

Paul Bowles was born on 30 December 1910 in New York City. He is considered one of the most remarkable American authors of the The Sheltering Sky Paul Bowles novel from 1949 first editiontwentieth century. He studied music with composer Aaron Copland before moving to Tangier, Morocco, with his wife, Jane. His first novel, The Sheltering Sky, was a bestseller in the 1950s and was made into a film by Bernardo Bertolucci in 1990. Bowles’s prolific career included many musical compositions, novels, collections of short stories, and books of travel, poetry, and translations. He died on 18 November 1999 in Tanger, Morocco at the age of 88 and was buried in Lakemont Cemetery, in upstate New York.

His critically acclaimed works include the National Book Critics Circle Award-winners George Mills (1982) and Mrs. Ted Bliss (1995), as well as the National Book Award finalists The Dick Gibson Show (1972),  Searches & Seizures (1974), and The MacGuffin (1991). His book of novellas, Van Gogh’s Room at Arles, was a finalist for the PEN Faulkner Award. Other novels he published are: Boswell: A Modern Comedy (1964, debut novel), A Bad Man (1967), The Magic Kingdom (1985) and The Rabbi of Lud (1987). He died at the age of 65 on 31 May 1995 in St. Louis, Missouri of a heart attack.

Zijn werk werd in vijfentwintig talen vertaald. Hij woonde tot zijn dood in op 15 april 2019 in New York waar hij aan de gevolgen van leverkanker overleed op 91 jarige leeftijd.

James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man is a powerful, trailblazing novel that exposes the intricate relationship between race and class in late nineteenth-century America.

After losing his mother at a very young age, the narrator is thrust from his comfortable, middle-class environment, afforded by his distant but aristocratic father, into the wider world. His passion for music begins in Georgia’s all-black church community and takes him from New York, where he plays ragtime for a rich white gentleman, to the South, where he witnesses lynchings and out of fear gives up his passion, as well as his race, to pass for white.

Relevant to this day, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man is an unflinching account of black experience in America.

James Weldon Johnson was born in Jacksonville, Florida,  on 17 June 1871. He trained in music and in 1901 moved to New York with his brother John; together they wrote around two hundred songs The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man James Weldon Johnson novel from 1912 first editionfor Broadway. His first book, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, published anonymously in 1912, was not a great success until he reissued it in his own name in 1927. In that time he established his reputation as a writer and became known in the Harlem Renaissance for his poems and for collating anthologies of poems by other black writers. Through his work as a civil rights activist he became the first executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as well as the first African American professor to be hired at New York University. He died on 26 June 1938 in Wiscasset, Maine, at the age of 67.
