Covering social, political and economic life in the province, the book explores the Viking and Norman invasions, the plantations and the Penal Laws, the rise of the United Irishmen and Orangeism, the Act of Union, emigration and the Great Famine, the linen industry and shipbuilding, and the Home Rule Crisis and partition, right through to civil rights, the turmoil of the Troubles and the period of peace that has followed.

Lavishly illustrated throughout, this accessible edition takes its place alongside Jonathan Bardon’s hugely popular A History of Ireland in 100 Episodes.

Dr Jonathan Bardon was born in Dbulin in 1941. He is a former lecturer at Queens University, Belfast, was the author of numerous works of Irish historiography. In 2002, he was awarded an OBE for his ‘services to community life’ in Northern Ireland. Jonathan died 21 April 2020 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, aged 78.

Evelyn is best known from her time presenting on RTÉ. They both love explaining the vagaries of Ireland’s weather and climate to the hugely interested public.

John Boyne is op 30 april 1971 geboren in de Ierse hoofdstad Dublin. Hij studeerde Engels aan het Trinity College in Dublin en aansluitend aan de University of East Anglia in Norwich, Engeland waar hij afstudeerde als Master of Arts. Inmiddels heeft John Boyne zo’n vijftien romans voor volwassen en zes romans voor young adults en twee verhalenbundels gepubliceerd. Zijn debuutroman  The Thief of Time (Dief van de tijd) verscheen in 2000. Hij is een productieve schrijver die bijna jaarlijks een nieuw boek uitbrengt. De kolonie is een ontluisterende fabel over twee buitenstaanders op een afgelegen Iers eiland tijdens The Troubles.

Het is de zomer van 1979. Een Engelse schilder, meneer Lloyd, op zoek naar rust die hem de ruimte geeft om te creëren, reist naar een klein eiland voor de westkust van Ierland. Hij weet niet dat er vlak achter hem een ​​Fransman volgt. Jean-Pierre Masson bezoekt het eiland al vele jaren en bestudeert de taal van de bewoners. Audrey Magee is een Ierse romanschrijfster. Ze werkte twaalf jaar als journaliste voor onder andere The Times en The Guardian. Haar debuutroman, The Undertaking, werd genomineerd voor de Women’s Prize for Fiction, de Franse Prix du Premier Roman, de Irish Book Awards en de Dublin Literary Award. Peter Vandermeersch is geboren op 23 februari 1961 in Torhout, België. werkte als journalist in Brussel, Parijs en New York,was hoofdredacteur van De Standaard in Brussel (1999-2010) en van NRC in Amsterdam (2010 tot 2019). In 2019 werd hij uitgever en enkele jaren laterCEO van de grootste Ierse mediagroep rond The Irish Independent en The Belfast Telegraph. Hij woont aan de Ierse Zee in Greystones (Wicklow), werkt in Dublin en Belfast, drinkt al een kwarteeuw Guinness met zijn Ierse familie en probeert al veertig jaar het land te doorgronden. Hij heeft trouwens de Nederlandse nationaliteit aangenomen.
