‘Aanname op gezag is de vloek der mensheid’, was haar lijfspreuk. Wilhelmina Drucker (1847-1925) was een van de eerste Nederlandse feministen en medeoprichtster van de vrouwenbeweging. Ze stelde de veroordeling van vrouwen tot het moederschap aan de kaak, net als de ondergeschiktheid van getrouwde vrouwen en de dubbele seksuele moraal. Minstens zo belangrijk was haar strijd voor het recht van vrouwen op betaald werk en vrouwenkiesrecht.

Van de vrouwen die de eerste feministische golf teweegbrachten, zijn Wilhelmina Drucker en Aletta Jacobs het bekendst. Drucker dankt die bekendheid vooral aan de actiegroep Dolle Mina, die in de jaren zeventig van de twintigste eeuw dermate spraakmakend was dat ‘dolle mina’ het synoniem werd voor feministe.

Eigenzinnig als ze was verdedigde Wilhelmina Drucker nooit de gevestigde orde. Ze koos altijd de oppositie en keerde zich tegen religieuze en wereldse autoriteiten. Als vrijdenkster en vredesactiviste nam ze deel aan het publieke debat over tal van parlementair-politieke en economische kwesties. Toen Pieter Jelles Troelstra en Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis het land toespraken, ging Wilhelmina Drucker met hen in gesprek, hoewel ze hen vaker tegensprak. En soms praatte ze er dwars doorheen.

In Wilhelmina Drucker herschrijft Marianne Braun een hoofdstuk uit de vaderlandse geschiedenis, met Drucker als lang onderbelicht gebleven hoofdpersoon.

Marianne Braun is historica, politicologe en neerlandica. Ze promoveerde op De prijs van de liefde, over de eerste feministische golf en het huwelijksrecht. Verder publiceerde ze tientallen artikelen over uiteenlopende aspecten van de vrouwenbeweging, het vrouwenkiesrecht en de cultuurgeschiedenis van de late negentiende eeuw.

Jo Shaw is Head of the School of Law, and has held the Salvesen Chair of European Institutions since January 2005. Since 2018, she has also held a part-time visiting position in the New Social Research programme of Tampere University in Finland. Between 2009-2013, she was Dean of Research of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, leading on research development and REF submission for the College. From 2014-2017 she was Director of IASH, where she led the Dangerous Women Project.

Inmiddels heeft ze meer dan vijftig titels op haar naam staan. Naast haar schrijfwerkzaamheden was ze jarenlang docent en trainer in Nederland en daarbuiten, richtte ze Feministische Uitgeverij Sara op en zette ze zich in voor Palestijnen in de Gazastrook. Tussen 2003 en 2011 was ze Eerste Kamerlid voor de SP; later stond ze aan de wieg van bij1.

Dutch director Marleen Gorris is known chiefly for two films: A Question of Silence (1982), her fiercely feminist first film, in which three women meet by chance in a women’s clothing boutique and ritually murder its male owner; and Antonia’s Line (1995), her fourth film and winner of the 1996 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, which traces four generations of Antonia’s female ‘line’ in the matriarchal community she establishes in postwar rural Holland. Both have been extensively discussed, though rarely together, and appear on university syllabuses. Her second Dutch language film, Broken Mirrors (1984), and her five films in English, however, have received far less, and in some cases no critical attention.

Using feminist reformulations of ideas of vulnerability and resistance, this first book-length study of her films examines their revisionings of narrative, time and space, and the possibilities they present of other narratives, other subjectivities and other relationships.

Een meeslepend, levensbevestigend verhaal over onafhankelijkheid, liefde, kracht, seksualiteit en het vinden van een ‘thuis’. Lordes Zami is rijk aan poëzie en tevens een ode aan alle vrouwen die een rol speelden in Lordes leven – haar strenge West-Indische moeder, haar twee oudere zussen, haar vriendinnen en haar geliefden. Samen maakten zij haar tot de ‘Zwarte, lesbische, feministische, socialistische moeder, strijder, dichter’ die ze uiteindelijk werd en die schreef met een ongekend felle, emotionele kracht.

Audre Lorde is geboren op 8 februari 1934 in New York. Ze was een Amerikaanse schrijver, activiste en dichter. In haar werk richtte ze zich op dynamische en confronterende thema’s als feminisme en racisme. Enkele andere van haar bekendste werken zijn Sister Outsider (essays), The Black Unicorn (gedichten) en The Cancer Journals (non-fictie). Ze overleed op 17 november 1992 in  Saint Croix op de Amerikaanse Maagdeneilanden aan de gevolgen van kanker.

Alkmaar was in 1961 het centrum van een internationale voetbalrevolutie. De plaatselijke KNVB-afdeling had stiekem drie vrouwen opgeleid als scheidsrechter in het jeugdvoetbal. Hun debuut sloeg in als een bom. Het hoofdbestuur van de KNVB kondigde direct een verbod af. Alkmaar ging echter door, waarna nog dertig vrouwen een scheidsrechterdiploma ontvingen. Noord-Holland was daarmee de eerste regio ter wereld waar vrouwen toegang kregen tot het voetbalveld, tot razernij van de gevestigde voetbalautoriteiten.
