Graziella ‘Lalla’ Romano is geboren op 11 november 1906 in Demonte, Italië. Ze was een Italiaanse romanschrijfster, dichteres, vertaler en beeldend kunstenaar. In 1941 publiceerde ze haar eerste dichtbundel. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog keerde ze terug naar haar thuisprovincie Cuneo en raakte betrokken bij de partizanen. Haar eerste roman, Maria, werd gepubliceerd in 1953. Ze groeide uit tot een van de meest gerenommeerde schrijfsters van Italië en won de Pavese-prijs (voor Gedeelde stilte) en de Strega-prijs voordat ze op vierennegentigjarige leeftijd overleed op 26 juni 2001 in Milaan.

Julio Llamazares is geboren 28 maart 1955 in Vegamián, provincie León in Spanje. Hij is een dichter, romanschrijver, essayist, journalist en scenarioschrijver, wiens werk in meer dan twintig talen is vertaald. Hij was tweemaal finalist voor de Spaanse Nationale Literatuurprijs, voor Luna de lobos (1985) en La lluvia amarilla (1988).

Mavis Gallant was born on 11 august 1922 in Montreal, Canada. She worked as a journalist before moving to Europe to devote herself to writing fiction. After traveling extensively she settled in Paris, where she lived until her death, though she never renounced her Canadian citizenship. Starting in 1951, the New Yorker published 116 of her stories. She was the recipient of the 2002 Rea Award for the Short Story and the 2004 PEN/Nabokov Award for lifetime achievement. She died on 18 february 2014 in Paris, France.

Edith Wharton (24 January 1862, New York City – 11 Augustus Edith Wharton The Glimpes of the Moon first edition from 19221937, Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt, France) was born in New York, into a rich and socially prominent family. She began to write at an early age, although it was a habit viewed by her family as unsuitable for a woman of her social class. In 1885 she married Edward “Teddy” Wharton, a Boston banker. They lived a privileged life, but Wharton gradually grew dissatisfied with the roles of wife and society matron. The Whartons moved to Paris in 1907 and divorced in 1913. Edith continued to live in France, her beloved adoptive home, until her death in 1937.

She won The National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction for Binocular Vision. She published over 250 works of short fiction in magazines, literary journals, anthologies and online publications. Her work won three O. Henry Prizes, the Drue Heinz Prize for Literature, and a Mary McCarthy Prize, among others. In 2011, Pearlman was the recipient of the PEN/Malamud Award, which put her in the ranks of luminaries like John Updike and Joyce Carol Oates.
