Het Zuid-Amerikaanse land Ecuador is niet direct een land dat bekend is om zijn wereldberoemde schrijvers en schrijfsters. Sterker zeer weinig EcuadorEcuadoraanse auteurs zijn vertaald in het Nederlands. Iets meer vertalingen zijn te vinden in het Engels en Duits. Maar ook hier slechts zeer mondjesmaat. In december 2009 begon Kate Zambreno een blog met de naam Frances Farmer is My Sister, waarop hen de door hun geliefde modernistische schrijfsters op een radicaal nieuwe manier onderzocht.

Vivienne Eliot, Jane Bowles, Jean Rhys en Zelda Fitzgerald stonden bekend als muzen van mannelijke schrijvers; hun eigen werk belandde in de marge, hun vaak substantiële bijdragen aan het werk van hun echtgenoten werd verdoezeld en vergeten – en niet zelden werden zijzelf uiteindelijk ondergebracht in psychiatrische instellingen. Rondom het blog ontstond een onlinegemeenschap die de verstikkende patriarchale kijk op het kunstenaarschap omverwierp en zo een alternatieve canon ontwikkelde.

In Heldinnen brengt Zambreno deze ideeën samen tot een vlijmscherp literair manifest. In een directe en volstrekt eigen stijl traceert Zambreno hoe de geschiedenis de vrouwelijke ervaring consequent als minderwaardig wegzet, en kanaliseert de woede daarover om zich te bevrijden van het nog altijd aanwezige patriarchale juk.

Kate Zambreno is op 30 december 1977 geboren. Hen is de auteur van meerdere veelgeprezen boeken, waaronder Green Girl, Screen Tests, Drifts en The Light Room. Scott Fitzgerald. Save Me the Waltz was the only novel she wrote and was published during her lifetime. She died March 10, 1948, at the age of 47 in the Highlight Mental Hospital Asheville, North Carolina during a fire.
