Waaraan kun je een western roman of wildwestroman herkennen?

Het antwoord op deze vraag is vrij simpel. Dit soort romans kenmerken zich doordat het verhaal zich afspeelt in het Wilde Westen van Amerika tussen de jaren 1860 tot 1900. Er zijn trouwens ook romans die je min of meer tot het genre kunt rekeningen maar zich toch later in de Verenigde Staten afspelen maar omdat ze verder alle kenmerken in zich dragen toch tot het genre worden gerekend.

Dit type roman dat in het Engels vaak wordt aangeduid met Western fiction of Western novel, ontstond aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw met de opkomst van de zogenaamde dime novels, in het Nederlands vaak aangeduid met drie stuiver romans. in de Verenigde Staten. Dit waren vrij korte en goedkoop geproduceerde boekjes die vooral dienden als vermaak. Wat later in de twintigste eeuw gingen ook bekende schrijvers western romans schrijven waardoor de kwaliteit omhoog ging. De plot van deze boeken kreeg meer gelaagdheid en de karakters meer diepgang.

John Fante was born in Denver, Colorado on 8 April 1909. He migrated to Los Angeles in his early twenties. Classically out of place in a town built on celluloid dreams, Fante’s literary fiction was full of Wait Until Spring, Bandini John Fante novel from 1938 first editiontorn grace and redemptive vengeance. Wait Until Spring, Bandini (1938), his first novel, began the saga of Arturo Bandini, a character whose story continues in The Road to Los Angeles, Ask the Dust and Dreams from Bunker Hill – collectively known as The Bandini Quartet. Fante published several other novels, as well as stories, novellas and screenplays in his seventy-four years, including The Brotherhood of the Grape (1977) and 1933 Was A Bad Year (posthumously, 1985). John Fante died on 8 May 1983 in Los Angeles, California, due to diabetes-related complications at the age of 74. He was posthumously recognised in 1987 with a Lifetime Achievement Award by PEN in Los Angeles, four years after his death.

Henry Beston planned to spend only two weeks in his newly built cottage on the outer beach of Cape Cod. As summer drifted into autumn, however, he found himself so entranced by the landscape’s rhythms and beauty that he could not bear to leave.

Settled in his isolated house facing the North Atlantic, Beston spent a year immersed in the raw, elemental life of the great beach around him. Observing the migrations of seabirds, savage winter storms and the constantly shifting interactions between sea and shore, he wrote of the passing seasons in ecstatic, riveting detail.

A highly influential classic of American nature writing, The Outermost House is a vital precursor to today’s masters of the genre. Impassioned and richly layered, it is a matchless evocation of the spirit of a place and the enduring appeal of the wild.

Henry Beston was born on 1 June 1888 in Quincy, Massachusetts and educated at Harvard. He wrote many books in his lifetime, including a memoir of his years in the volunteer ambulance corps in the First World War, an account of life in the US Navy and a book of fairy tales. The Outermost House, widely considered his masterpiece, was published in 1928. His Cape Cod house was named a National Literary Landmark in 1964, and it was destroyed by a huge winter storm in 1978. He died at the age of 79 in Nobleboro, Maine.

Henry Miller called the end of his life in America and the start of a new, bohemian existence in 1930s Paris his ‘rosy crucifixion’. His searing fictionalized autobiography of this time of liberation was banned for nearly twenty years. Sexus, the first volume in The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy, looks back to his early sexual escapades in Brooklyn, and his growing infatuation with the playful, teasing dance hall hostess who will become the great obsession of his life.

Henry Miller was born 29 December 1891 in New York City. He is one of the most important American writers of the 20th century. His best-known novels include Tropic of Cancer (1934), Tropic of Capricorn (1939), and the Rosy Crucifixion trilogy (Sexus, 1949, Plexus, 1953, and Nexus, 1959), all published in France and banned in the US and the UK until 1964. He is widely recognised as an irreverent, risk-taking writer who redefined the novel and made the link between the European avant-garde and the American Beat generation. At the age of 88 he died on 7 June 1980 in Los Angeles, California.
