Antropologische boeken

Maar de inzichten van de antropologie veranderen snel en dat is zeker het geval in de laatste decennia. Veel te lang stond het androcentrisme centraal, waarmee bedoeld wordt dat onderzoek naar behoeften en waarden van mannen als de norm worden beschouwd in het antropologisch onderzoek. Gelukkig is dit heel snel aan het veranderen en is het meeste onderzoek tegenwoordig veel pluriformer van aard.

In De ontkenning van de dood uit 1973 pakt Becker het probleem van de grootste leugen van het menselijk bestaan aan: de weigering om de eigen sterfelijkheid te onderkennen. De gehele beschaving lijkt zichzelf namelijk te beschermen tegen het besef van de dood als einde van het leven.

Volgens Becker leven we behalve in onze tastbare wereld ook in een symbolische, waarin zich de overtuiging van onze onsterfelijkheid bevindt. We scheppen om herinnerd te worden, om deel uit te maken van iets waarvan we geloven dat het eeuwig zal duren. Op die manier hopen we ons leven betekenis te geven. Becker werpt een nieuw licht op de aard van de mensheid en roept op tot het leven van het leven.

Ernest Becker is geboren op 27 september 1924 in Springfield, Massachusetts in de Verenigde Staten. Hij was cultureel antropoloog. Hij was achtereenvolgens hoogleraar aan de de universiteiten van Berkeley, San Francisco en Vancouver. De ontkenning van de dood werd in 1974 bekroond met de Pulitzerpijs. Hij overleed op 6 maart 1974 in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada aan de gevolgen van darmkanker. Hij werd slechts 49 jaar oud.

Al eeuwen koesteren wij, vanuit de visie op de mens naast of tegenover de natuur, de idee dat we de beste kennis, de sterkste economie, de machtigste politieke visie hebben: baas over de natuur, én over de ‘anderen’. Tot dit gebouw wankelt: klimaatcrisis, ecologische rampen, nieuwe en toenemende ongelijkheid, tanende macht over de wereld. Rik Pinxtens voorstel is radicaal, maar eenvoudig: stop eindelijk dat verschil-denken (natuur versus mens, westerse versus ontwikkelingsgebieden). We zijn mondiaal interdependent geworden: we moeten samen denken, luisteren en overleggen om te kunnen overleven als mensheid. En wetenschap toont dat de mensheid één mayonaise is en geen olie naast azijn, naast ei.

In Een eerlijke nieuwe wereld reikt Pinxten alternatieve zienswijzen aan voor het dominante, globale marktdenken: geen privébezit op mondiaal niveau, wel bindende afspraken voor de mens-in-verbinding-met-alles. Daaronder: democratie op vele niveaus, van onderuit. En ten slotte, een plaats voor het individu, ingebed, met eerlijke verantwoordelijke erkenning van de rechten van alle niveaus, ook van de natuur. Dit is geen dromerij, maar een ‘survival kit’ om volgende generaties nog een zinvol en mooi leven toe te laten.

Rik Pinxten is geboren in 1947. Hij is emeritus hoogleraar culturele antropologie en vergelijkende religiestudie aan de UGent. Hij was voorzitter van het Humanistisch Verbond Vlaanderen en laureaat van de Arkprijs voor het Vrije Woord. Hij publiceerde eerder over cultuur, opvoeding, religie en intercultureel samenleven.
