Welke Keltische talen worden er gesproken?

Inmiddels is het Keltisch als levende taal in grote delen van het oorspronkelijke gebied uitgestorven. Om precies te zijn wordt in het uiterste zuidwesten van Engeland, in Cornwall nog Cornisch gesproken. In Wales het Welsh of Kymrisch en in Schotland het Gaelisch, ook wel Schots genoemd. Op het eiland Man werd tot in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw Manx gesproken. Het uiterste westen van Ierland wordt het Iers of Gaeilge de Keltische taal die nog enigszins levend is. Op het Europese vasteland in het uiterste westen van Frankrijk, in Bretagne om precies te zijn, het Bretoens of Brezhoneg de Keltische taal die door een deel van de bevolking gesproken wordt.

Andrew Lownie was born in december 1961. He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he was President of the Union, before taking his master’s and doctorate at Edinburgh University. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he later returned to Cambridge as a visiting fellow at Churchill College. He has been a bookseller, publisher, journalist writing for The Times, Telegraph, Wall Street Journal, Spectator, Guardian and since 1988 has run his own literary agency. He is President of the Biographers Club, sits on the board of Biographers International Organisation and is a Trustee of the Campaign for Freedom of Information. His books include the prize-winning Stalin’s Englishman: The Lives of Guy Burgess (2015) and the top ten Sunday Times bestsellers The Mountbattens: Their Lives and Loves (2019) and Traitor King: The Scandalous Exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (2021).

Hilary Mantel was born 6 July 1952 in Glossop, Derbyshire, Engeland. She is the author of the bestselling novel Wolf Hall and its Hilary Mantel Wolf Hall historical novel about Thomas Cromwell Booker Prize 2012sequel, Bring Up the Bodies, which both won the Booker Prize. The final novel of the Wolf Hall trilogy, The Mirror & the Light, debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and won world-wide critical acclaim. Mantel wrote seventeen celebrated books, including the memoir Giving Up the Ghost, and she was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, the Walter Scott Prize, the Costa Book Award, the Hawthornden Prize, and many other accolades. In 2014, Mantel was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She died at age seventy 22 September 2022 in Exeter, Devon, England.

Benjamin Wood was born in 1981 and grew up in Merseyside. Seascraper is his fifth novel. his previous works have been shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award, the Commonwealth Book Prize, the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award, the RSL Encore Award ,the CWA Gold Dagger Award and the European Union Prize for Literature. In 2014, he won France’s Prix du Roman Fnac. He is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at King’s College, London, and lives in Surrey with his wife and sons.

Andrew Miller was born in 1974 in Bristol, Engeland. His first novel, Ingenious Pain, was published by Sceptre in 1997. It won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and the Grinzane Cavour Prize for the best foreign novel published in Italy. It has been followed by Casanova, Oxygen, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Whitbread Novel of the Year Award in 2001, The Optimists, One Morning Like a Bird, Pure, which won the Costa Book of the Year Award in 2011, The Crossing, Now We Shall Be Entirely Free, The Slowworm’s Song and The Land in Winter, which won the Winston Graham Historical Prize and the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction in 2025. Andrew Miller’s novels have been published in translation in twenty countries. Born in Bristol in 1960, he currently lives in Somerset.
