The splendour of Cambridge – to which more than eight million visitors are attracted every year – and its famous university have ensured that the town has long enjoyed international renown. Digging deep into its emergence and evolution, A Short History of Cambridge sheds light on the origins of academia in the area and the fascinating history of one of England’s most famous towns.

From the Middle Ages to the present day, Richard Tames’ digestible and comprehensive history traces Cambridge through the Reformation, the Civil War, the age of Empire, the Great Wars and beyond. Exploring the world-renowned colleges and research facilities of the University, its students and scholars, and their interactions with the townsfolk over the generations, Tames tracks the town’s vast cultural output, from art and literature to theatre and comedy.

This joyful history will delight, in equal measure, readers familiar with the cobbles of Cambridge and those who have seen no further than the stained-glass windows of King’s Chapel.

Richard Tames read history at Pembroke College, Cambridge, and has taught for Syracuse University in London. He is the author of An Armchair Traveller’s History of Oxford and An Armchair Traveller’s History of London and coauthor of An Armchair Traveller’s History of Bath.

  • “The Rise and Fall of the House of York is the most devastating royal biography ever written.” (Daily Mail)
  • “This searing biography of Prince Andrew crackles with scandals about sex and money on almost every page. The author’s best-selling biographies have a habit of changing the reputation of famous figures… Although in the case of Entitled, he hasn’t so much cemented Prince Andrew’s reputation, as put it in concrete boots and thrown it in the river. It is hard to see how he might come back from this.” (BBC News)

Drawing on four years of research, numerous FOI requests and interviews with over a hundred people who have never spoken before, the book traces the lives of the late Queen’s second son and his ex-wife through their childhoods, courtship, marriage, divorce, careers, and royal and charitable activities.

Still living in the same house, they claim to be ‘the happiest divorced couple in the world’. The book investigates the reality of their relationship and their love lives. It charts Andrew’s record in the Falklands, his business activities and reveals details of how the couple have been able financially to sustain their extravagant lifestyles. It also recounts the full story of the Yorks’ links with Jeffrey Epstein.

Chronicling their lives in parallel, the picture that emerges is of a spoilt prince unable to connect and a duchess pushed by her insecurities into a desperate need to maintain the attention her ‘royal’ status brought. Rigorously researched and packed full of revelations, this is eye-watering biography at its best.

Andrew Lownie was born in december 1961. He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he was President of the Union, before taking his master’s and doctorate at Edinburgh University. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he later returned to Cambridge as a visiting fellow at Churchill College. He has been a bookseller, publisher, journalist writing for The TimesTelegraphWall Street JournalSpectatorGuardian and since 1988 has run his own literary agency. Hilary Mantel Wolf Hall recensie en review

  • “As soon as I opened the book I was gripped. I read it almost non-stop. When I did have to put it down, I was full of regret that the story was over, a regret I still feel. This is a wonderful and intelligently imagined retelling of a familiar tale from an unfamiliar angle.” (The Times)

England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

Hilary Mantel was born 6 July 1952 in Glossop, Derbyshire, Engeland. She is the author of the bestselling novel Wolf Hall and its Hilary Mantel Wolf Hall historical novel about Thomas Cromwell Booker Prize 2012sequel, Bring Up the Bodies, which both won the Booker Prize. The final novel of the Wolf Hall trilogy, The Mirror & the Light, debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and won world-wide critical acclaim. Mantel wrote seventeen celebrated books, including the memoir Giving Up the Ghost, and she was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, the Walter Scott Prize, the Costa Book Award, the Hawthornden Prize, and many other accolades. In 2014, Mantel was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She died at age seventy 22 September 2022 in Exeter, Devon, England.

And it is that: the details of the job and the physicality of the labour are wonderfully captured by Benjamin Wood. But this novel becomes much more than that. It’s a book about dreams, an exploration of class and family, a celebration of the power and the glory of music, a challenge to the limits of literary realism, and – stunningly – a love story.” (Booker Prize 2025 Jury)

Flaptekst van de roman van Benjamin Wood

Thomas lives a slow, deliberate life with his mother in Longferry, working his grandpa’s trade as a shanker. He rises early to take his horse and cart to the grey, gloomy beach to scrape for shrimp, spending the afternoon selling his wares, trying to wash away the salt and scum, pining for Joan Wyeth down the street, and rehearsing songs on his guitar. At heart, he is a folk musician, but it remains a private dream.

When a striking visitor turns up, bringing the promise of Hollywood glamour, Thomas is shaken from the drudgery of his days and begins to see a different future. But how much of what the American claims is true, and how far can his inspiration carry Thomas?

Haunting and timeless, this is the story of a young man hemmed in by his circumstances, striving to achieve fulfilment far beyond the world he knows.

Andrew Miller The Land in Winter review en recensie

  • “In the depths of Britain’s coldest winter, two neighbouring women forge a friendship in the countryside. It’s 1962 and they have both just become pregnant. Around them, the men are struggling: maimed by father figures, haunted by the past, hampered by the destructiveness of their own desires. As a winter storm wreaks havoc on their lives, these characters become pivotal figures in a community precariously balanced between history and future: between the damage wrought by the war and the freedom for women that lies ahead. In beautifully atmospheric prose, Andrew Miller brings suspense and mystery to this seemingly inconsequential chapter in British history.” (Booker Prize 2025 jury)
  • “This is a quiet book about quiet lives, but the delicate attention Miller affords his characters’ inner lives makes for incredibly satisfying reading.” (Lucy Scholes, Financial Times)
  • “The Land in Winter is a brilliant novel, but wrap your emotions up tight because Miller steers it expertly towards a desolate, distressing ending.” (Martin Chilton, Independent)
  • “Psychologically acute… For 200 impeccable pages Miller gives us four intensely imagined inner lives… grippin.” (Times Literary Supplement)

A hilarious unofficial tribute to the most opinionated and entertainingly cantankerous band in rock and roll history.

Hello and listen up. In 1994, with the shock of the lightning that was Oasis’s force-of-nature debut album, the British band’s cigarettes-and-alcohol-fueled founding brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher went supernova all around the world. Most artists would have responded to this fame by opting to cast no shadow, saying less in public, or at least being more cautious when they did, reluctant to add to the weight of the world on their shoulders. Not Liam and Noel, who did a strange thing. As if born on a different cloud, they refused to be quiet ones and acquiesce to the typical masterplan for celebrity.

For the next thirty years, they never stopped opening their big mouths and shouting out loud their opinions on everything underneath the sky. Whether as stormy as a cloudburst, as playful as a shakermaker, as wise as a headshrinker in a rockin’ chair, as uncouth as a girl in a dirty shirt with mucky fingers, or as lewd as fuckin’ in the bushes, their heathen chemistry was always electric—some might say as addictive as morning glory. Oasis Talking Shite celebrates these songbirds’ refreshing candor, constructing a magic pie of memorable quotes and photographs into a wall of wonder. Here they go let it out on nearly every topic imaginable, including religion, politics, technology, sports, aging, America, aliens, the Big Bang Theory, open-toed shoes, Christmas, SpongeBob SquarePants, other bands, and of course their all-time favorite subject: each other.

Timed to the long-awaited Oasis reunion tour in summer 2025, in which they are keeping the dream alive despite just getting older, this book will help you stop crying your eyes out if you didn’t get tickets. In fact, it’s an eyeball tickler. D’you know what I mean? It’s something to read while waiting for the rapture. It won’t let you down and gives you something about which to talk tonight or on a Sunday morning call—an opportunity to look back in appreciation (not anger) as well as a reminder of why Liam and Noel will never slide away and definitely (not maybe) live forever as two of the most supersonic rock ‘n’ roll stars to ever turn up the sun. So put yer money where yer mouth is, bring it on down to the bookstore register, and bag it up.

Not the Gallagher Brothers are not the Gallagher brothers (in case there was still any confusion), but they do share a love of rock ‘n’ roll, parkas, crisps, Man City, and talking shite.

Richard Cadogan, poet and would-be bon vivant, arrives for what he thinks will be a relaxing holiday in the city of dreaming spires. Late one night, however, he discovers the dead body of an elderly woman lying in a toyshop and is coshed on the head. When he comes to, he finds that the toyshop has disappeared and been replaced with a grocery store. The police are understandably skeptical of this tale but Richard’s former schoolmate, Gervase Fen (Oxford professor and amateur detective), knows that truth is stranger than fiction (in fiction, at least). Soon the intrepid duo are careening around town in hot pursuit of clues but just when they think they understand what has happened, the disappearing-toyshop mystery takes a sharp turn…

Erudite, eccentric and entirely delightful – Before Morse, Oxford’s murders were solved by Gervase Fen, the most unpredictable detective in classic crime fiction.
