The Irish Revolution Diplomacy and reactions review en recensie

  • “A major contribution to our understanding of the revolutionary period, offering fresh insights into many under-explored aspects of the time. A fitting final contribution to the legacy of the late Dermot Keogh.” (David McCullagh, Jounalist and authort of From Crown to Harp)
  • “This impressive and timely collection offers an astute analysis of the long underappreciated international dimension of the turbulent period of 1919 to 1923 in Irish history. With its wide geographical range, focusing on Europe, the United States and the Irish diaspora within the British Empire, the book is essential reading for anyone interested in the global repercussions of Ireland’s “Greater War” experience, international relations in an age of revolutionary nation-building, and modern European history.” (Robert Gerwarthe, Professor of Modern History)

Flaptekst van het boek over de Ierse Revolutie

Discover how Irish revolutionaries transformed their independence struggle into a global diplomatic campaign (1919-1923). Through innovative public diplomacy and diaspora mobilisation, they developed strategies for small nations to influence world affairs. This pioneering study locates the struggle within the context of post-war settlements as Irish republicans sought to shape international relations.

It is often forgotten that leaders of the Irish Revolution considered the domestic and international campaigns for Irish independence to be organically linked. Focusing on this dimension can relocate the Irish struggle in its original and fullest context.

This collection of essays follows the activities of Irish envoys abroad over four years as they defended the right of Dáil Éireann to self-determination and lobbied for its recognition in the capitals of Europe and the British Commonwealth, as well as in the United States. The global impact of Terence MacSwiney’s hunger strike protest is highlighted, as well as the important role played by Catholic networks, disapora activists and women volunteers.

By reconsidering its international dimension, this book locates the Irish Revolution within an appropriate background of post-war settlements that were not only contested but also remained comparatively fluid. Cultural repercussions of the Irish struggle are also examined at a time of growing international debate about small, emergent states and the existence of contested state boundaries arising from the upending of the old international order caused by the First World War.

This nationally important book reveals the untold story of the Irish tricolour: its true origins, a forgotten heroine, and the emblems it replaced.

For the first time, a fully referenced history corrects long-standing myths and slurs surrounding Ireland’s national flag. It also reinterprets iconic Irish symbols — from the harp and shamrock to the tri-spiral — placing them within the broader journey toward Irish nationhood and national identity. Along Ireland’s road to a republic, key figures are restored to their rightful place — from Owen Roe O’Neill and Wolfe Tone to Thomas Meagher and Padraig Pearse.

The book explores crucial turning points — the rise of green as Ireland’s colour, the rebellions of 1642, 1798, 1848, and 1916, Catholic Emancipation, and the flag’s later use — and misuse. A bold, insightful retelling of Ireland’s story through its symbols.

John Crotty is an Irish author and historian. His debut book, Spike Island, was critically acclaimed, selling out its first print run and featuring in Books.ie’s ‘Books of the year’. He previously led the running of Spike Island as CEO. He has written for RTÉ and The Sunday Times and is an accomplished public speaker, appearing on several TV shows like the Discovery Channel, ITV’s How the Victorians Built Britain and RTÉ, in addition to innumerable radio appearances. He holds a degree from Swansea University and regularly speaks at history and writing events as well as contributing to historical podcasts. He has built an engaged social media audience interested in an accurate retelling of Irish history, and comprehensive historiography related to Irish symbols and identity, the Irish tricolour, Ireland in the Second World War and Spike Island.

When art historian Max Morden returns to the seaside village where he once spent a childhood holiday, he is both escaping from a recent loss and confronting a distant trauma.

But it was his contemporaries, the Grace twins Myles and Chloe, who most fascinated Max. He grew to know them intricately, even intimately. What happened next would haunt him for the rest of his years, and shape everything that was to follow.

John Banville was born on 8 December 1945 in Wexford, Ireland, in 1945. He is the author of many highly acclaimed and prize-winning novels including The Sea, which won the 2005 Booker Prize. Flaptekst van het boek over de geschiedenis van Ierland

A brisk, concise, and readable overview of Irish history from the Protestant Reformation to the dawn of the twenty-first century.

Five centuries of Irish history are explored in this informative and accessible volume. Beginning with Ireland’s modern period at the dawn of the sixteenth century, John Gibney continues through to virtually the present day, offering an integrated overview of the island nation’s cultural, political, and socioeconomic evolution.

This succinct, scholarly study covers important historical events, including the Cromwellian conquest and settlement, the Great Famine, and the struggle for Irish independence. Along the way, it explores major themes such as Ireland’s often contentious relationship with Britain, the impact of the Protestant Reformation, the ongoing religious tensions it inspired, and the global reach of the Irish diaspora. This unique, wide-ranging work assimilates the most recent scholarship on a wide range of historical controversies, making it an essential addition to the library of any student of Irish studies.

John Gibney completed his doctorate at Trinity College Dublin. He is the author of a number of books including The Shadow of a Year: The 1641 Rebellion in Irish History and Memory.
