Sarah Orne Jewett was born ion 3 september 1849 into a financially independent, middle-class family in South Berwick, Maine. She went intermittently to a local school, but was mostly self-educated and read voraciously. Inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel set in Maine, The Pearl of Orr’s Island, she began to write about her native region of New England. Her first story appeared in 1868 in the Atlantic Monthly, which continued to publish her work. Sarah Orne Jewett The Country of the Pointed Firs first edition 1896Friendships were of fundamental importance to her, particularly friendships between women. She became part of Boston’s cultural elite, and was good friends with her publisher James T. Fields and his wife Annie. After his death in 1881 she moved in with Annie, spending half the year with her around Boston and the other half in the family house in Maine. Her novels include Deephaven (1877) and The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896), both of which reveal a sense of community and place, and A Country Doctor (1884), written in memory of her father. She also published nine volumes of short stories between 1879 and 1899. Sarah Orne Jewett incurred serious injuries in 1902 after being thrown from a carriage. This prevented any further writing. She died on 24 juni 1909, aged 59 in South Berwick, Main.

Alice Austen studeerde creative writing aan Harvard University onder de hoede van Seamus Heaney. Na haar studie verhuisde ze naar Brussel en woonde ze aan Place Brugmann. Austen schreef eerder voor film en theater. Ze woont momenteel in Milwaukee en werkt aan een film en een nieuwe roman.

The story cuts in time from the arrival of white settlers’ ships to the last indigenous landowner fighting to hold on to scraps of his ancestral home and back to the school’s PTA auction. It interweaves an opioid-addicted nineteenth-century con man–cum–civic booster, a disgraced Navy seaman building an airplane that travels faster than sound, a stay-at-home dad hustling to open the city’s first legal weed shop and Sami’s grandmother, a survivor of Japanese American incarceration during World War II, who founded the school’s once-celebrated music program.

The novel traces their false starts, triumphs, and heartbreaks through the booms and busts of the Yukon gold rush, the jet age, Big Tech, and beyond. By exploring the converging and often clashing personalities that make up the dynamic soul of a place, Supersonic illuminates themes of identity, displacement, destruction, and reinvention that give rise to all great American cities.

Thomas Kohnstamm was born on 24 november 1975 and raised in Seattle and still lives in the same house he grew up in—now with his wife and two children. He’s a career-long freelance writer and has run his own video and animation studio for over a decade. Supersonic is his third book.
