Recensie en ∗∗∗∗∗ van onze redactie

Een boek van ruim 900 pagina’s over een de in Nederland tot nu toe onbekende Noorse ontdekkingsreiziger Carl Lumholtz. Waar begint Meridiaan Uitgevers aan om zo’n boek in Nederlandse vertaling uit te geven. Is dit geen onverantwoord risico en zal een boek met een onderwerp als dit de Nederlandse lezer kunnen aanspreken?

Maar dan denk je terug aan Haaienkoorts het boek van de Noorse  Morten A. Strøksnes dat in 2016 in Nederlandse vertaling verscheen en de indruk die dit boek maakt en hoe de titel de inhoud van het boek exact beschreef. En dan begin je te lezen. Al snel pakt Strøksnes je volledig bij de lurven. Wat een boek heeft hij geschreven! Wat een tijd en werk moet hij erin hebben gestopt!

Je begint aan het boek en wegleggen wil of kan je niet meer. Zo’n boek is het. Bovendien is het veel meer dan een traditionele biografie. Natuurlijk het leven van Carl Lumholtz wordt in detail beschreven maar de schrijver trekt het werk in een veel breder perspectief. Hij durft zichzelf het verhaal in te brengen, reflecteert op heden en verleden en gaat ongemakkelijke overwegingen niet uit te weg.

Laat je door Strøksnes dit bijzondere boek insleuren. Spijt zul je er niet van krijgen want het is een leeservaring die je niet vaak zult krijgen. Zelfs de omvang blijkt dan geen enkel probleem. Sterker nog je zult het jammer vinden dat het uit is. Gelukkig siddert het daarna nog een tijdje na en over enige tijd kun je het herlezen en ongetwijfeld zaken ontdekken die je bij de eerste lezing ontgaan zijn. Zo’n boek is het. En richting Meridiaan Uitgevers, alle complimenten dat zij het aandurven zo’n boek uit te geven. Het getuigt van bijna net zoveel moed als waarover de schrijver van dit meesterwerk beschikt. Het verhaal over de Noorse ontdekkingsreiziger Carl Lumholtz verhaal is amper bekend, hoewel hij in zijn eigen tijd befaamd was om zijn expedities naar Australië, Mexico en Borneo (Kalimantan). Bij leven kreeg Lumholtz vele onderscheidingen en werd in één adem genoemd met collega-verkenners als Amundsen en Nansen, Stanley en Livingstone.

Morten A. Strøksnes wil met dit ambitieuze en unieke boek, waaraan hij twintig jaar aan heeft gewerkt, Lumholtz uit de vergetelheid halen. Hij zocht naar diens nalatenschap  in archieven, bibliotheken en musea over de hele wereld, en reisde hem zo’n 150 jaar later na naar Australië, Mexico en Kalimantan – een paar keer met gevaar voor eigen leven. Die expedities vormen de ruggengraat van het boek, maar Strøksnes verweeft ze met belangrijke thema’s als kolonialisme, racisme, vernietiging van de natuur, en culturele diversiteit, omdat dit boek beslist ook over ons nú, in deze tijd, moest gaan, vond Strøksnes.

Vandaag de dag komt de wereld waarin Lumholtz werd geboren ons vreemd voor. Tijdens diens leven echter, stapte men de moderne tijd in. In dit spanningsveld tussen het vreemde en het vertrouwde heeft Strøksnes uitzonderlijk rijke materie aangeboord. Zijn reizen gaan vergezeld van uitgebreid, baanbrekend onderzoek in archieven over de hele wereld, niet in de laatste plaats in de Verenigde Staten, waar Lumholtz dertig jaar lang zijn uitvalsbasis had.

Strøksnes onthult niet alleen Lumholtz’ leven en tijd in al zijn pracht, wreedheid en geweld; hij gebruikt diens tijdperk ook als een donkere weerspiegeling van de onze – en al haar crises.

Morten A. Strøksnes (is geboren op 30 november 1965 in Kirkenes. Hij  is een Noorse intellectueel, historicus, journalist, fotograaf en schrijver. Hij heeft negen veelgeprezen en -bekroonde boeken gepubliceerd. Zijn prijswinnende boek Haaienkoorts (∗∗∗∗∗) betekende een internationale doorbraak. De man die de wereld wilde zien is een project van vele jaren geweest. Strøksnes woont tegenwoordig in Lillehammer.

Jacques Bussillet is a French journalist and writer who saw his first motorcycle race when he was nine-years-old, and followed the Continental Circus as mechanic and helper. After studying journalism at university, he reported about Grand Prix motorcycle racing during the 1970s and ’80s for the leading weekly Moto Journal and the daily sport newspaper l’Equipe. He met and knew all the players of motorcycle racing and has kept in contact with this world. He has published around 20 books about motorcycle sport and champions.

Gerald Murnane is geboren op 25 februari 1939 in Coburg, Victoria in Australië. Na een korte tijd gestudeerd te hebben voor het priesterschap werd hij leraar op een lagere school. In 1969 behaald hij een bachelor in de kunsten aan de University of Melbourne. gedurende deze periode begon hij ook met schrijver wat in 1974 resulteerde in zijn debuutroman Tamarisk Row.

Set in the leafy northern suburbs of Sydney during the 1940s, The Watch Tower is a novel of relentless and acute psychological power.

Elizabeth Harrower was born in Sydney on 8 February 1928 in Newcastle, New South Wales.  She moved to London in 1951. She travelled extensively and began to write fiction. Her first novel Down in the City was published in 1957, and was followed by The Long Prospect a year later. In 1959 she returned to Sydney where she Elizabeth Harrower The Watch Tower Australian novel from 1966 first editionbegan working for the ABC and as a book reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald. In 1960 she published The Catherine Wheel, the story of an Australian law student in London, her only novel not set in Sydney. The Watch Tower appeared in 1966. No further novels were published until May 2014 when Harrower’s ‘lost’ novel, In Certain Circles, was released. Her work is austere, intelligent, ruthless in its perceptions about men and women. She was admired by many of her contemporaries, including Patrick White and Christina Stead, and is without doubt among the most important writers of the postwar period in Australia. Elizabeth Harrower died in Sydney on 7 July 2020 at the age of ninety-two.

Set in nineteenth-century Australia, Voss is the story of the secret passion between an explorer and a naïve young woman. Although they have met only a few times, Voss and Laura are joined by overwhelming, obsessive feelings for each other. Voss sets out to cross the continent, and as hardships, mutiny and betrayal whittle away his power to endure and to lead, his attachment to Laura gradually increases. Laura, waiting in Sydney, moves through the months of separation as if they were a dream and Voss the only reality.

Patrick White was born 28 May 1912 in Knightsbridge, London in England. He was taken to Australia, where his father owned a sheep farm, when he was six months old. He was educated in England at Patrick White Voss 1957 novel first editionCheltenham college and King’s College, Cambridge. He settled in London, where he wrote several unpublished novels, then served in the RAF during the war. He returned to Australia after the war. He became the most considerable figure in modern Australian literature, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973. The great poet of Australian landscape, he turned its vast empty spaces into great mythic landscapes of the soul. His position as a man of letters was controversial, provoked by his acerbic, unpredictable public statements and his belief that it is eccentric individuals who offer the only hope of salvation. He died in Sydney, Australia on 30 September 1990 at the age of 78.
