Aan de hand van haar eigen geschiedenis, samen met de door de oorlog dramatisch verlopen geschiedenis van haar ouders, maakt ze duidelijk hoe persoonlijke ervaringen de visie op de samenle­ving kunnen bepalen, en hoe die wortels doorslaggevend kunnen zijn voor politieke ideeën.

Hedy d’Ancona is geboren op 1 oktober 1937. is een belangrijk feminist en was vooraanstaand PvdA-politicus. Ze was universitair onderzoeker, politiek actief als Eerste Kamerlid, oprichter van Man Vrouw Maatschappij en redacteur bij Opzij. Maar ook staatssecretaris van emancipatie, minister van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Cultuur en tien jaar lid van het Europees Parlement. In 2021 verscheen haar boek Vrolijk verval, dat wekenlang in de bestsellerlijst stond. In 2022 volgde Kouwe kermis.

Hoe is het om op je 22ste de diagnose ongeneeslijke longkanker te krijgen? Hoe beleven je partner, vriendinnen, ouders dat? En hoe is het als mensen altijd willen weten hoe het met je gaat, zelfs op het moment dat je een chemo-infuus in je arm geprikt krijgt?

Hoe is het, om tegen alle verwachtingen in, toch nog de 26 aan te tikken? Om het concert van Beyoncé vanaf een brancard te aanschouwen? En hoe is het om écht alleen nog maar te doen waar je zelf zin in hebt?

Er veranderde nogal wat, toen Eva van een gezonde, ambitieuze naar een ongeneeslijke, even ambitieuze twintiger ging. Een twintiger die heel veel dingen los heeft moeten laten, maar tegelijkertijd voller in het leven staat dan ooit. Eva vertelt in dit boek op openhartige, bij vlagen hilarische maar bovenal eigen wijze waar ze allemaal doorheen is gegaan en hoe ze dat beleefd heeft. Ook haar naasten komen aan het woord.

Ondanks de diagnose ongeneeslijke (long)kanker die Eva Hermans-Kroot in 2021 kreeg, studeerde ze in 2023 cum laude af aan de communicatieopleiding van de Fontys Hogeschool. Met haar Instagram-account @longeneeslijk hield ze in eerste instantie haar directe omgeving op de hoogte van haar medische traject, maar dat groeide uit naar meer dan 500.000 volgers. Eva was in 2024 te zien in het tiende seizoen van het BNNVARA-programma Over Mijn Lijk en verscheen regelmatig bij Qmusic om Mattie en Marieke bij te praten over hoe het met haar ging. Ze woonde met haar man Matthijs in Tilburg, waar puzzelen ineens een noodzakelijke hobby werd. Eva Hermans-Kroot overleed op 30 november 2024.

Hanneke Mijnster werkt als freelancejournalist voor onder meer Psychologie Magazine, &C en als vaste columnist voor Libelle. Ze schrijft columns, interviews en verhalen over zaken die het leven moeilijk en mooi maken. In juni 2024 verscheen haar eerste boek Hé is dit ook ADHD? bij Volt.

Flaptekst van het boek over Lviv van Józef Wittlin

Józef Wittlin schreef Mijn Lwów in 1946 in de vs. Lwów (tegenwoordig bekend als Lviv) was net het toneel geweest van een gruwelijke oorlog en massale deportaties. Zelf was de joodse Wittlin er in 1940 in geslaagd met zijn gezin via Frankrijk naar de VS te vluchten. In februari 1945 werd op de Conferentie van Jalta besloten dat Lwów voortaan geen deel meer zou uitmaken van Polen, maar van de Sovjetrepubliek Oekraïne. Voor Wittlin betekende dit dat hij zijn vaderland nooit meer terug zou zien.

In zijn ballingsoord New York bleef hij met weemoed terugdenken aan zijn tijd in Lwów. Met lichte ironie en een scherp oog beschrijft hij het straatbeeld van de stad, haar kathedralen, synagoges en parken, en alle kleurrijke inwoners die haar door het oorlogsgeweld zijn ontvallen, maar die voortleven in de herinnering. In Mijn Lwów weet Wittlin als geen ander over te brengen hoe het voelt om heimwee te hebben naar een plaats die nooit meer zo zal zijn als je haar ooit leerde kennen.

Józef Wittlin is geboren op 17 augustus 1896 in Dmytrów, bij Lviv in Oostenrijk-Hogarije (tegenwoordig Oekraïne). Hij was een Poolse schrijver en dichter. In Wenen studeerde hij filosofie maar trad samen met zijn vriend de schrijver Joseph Roth toe tot het Oostenrijkse leger. Echter doordat hij geveld werd door roodvonk werd hij als soldaat nooit echt actief aan het front. In 1922 verhuisde hij naar Łódź en in 1927 naar Warschau in Polen. Hij trouwde in 1924 met Halina Handelsmann en maakte samen met haar verschillende reizen in Europa. Tijdens het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog woonde hij in Parijs. Daarvandaan vluchtte hij in 1940 naar Biarritz om  in januari 1941 via Nice door Spanje en Portugal naar de Verenigde Staten te reizen. Hij bleef in de Verenigde Staten wonen en overleed op 28 februari 1976 in New York City en werd 79 jaar oud.

Theodor Kallifatides, an acclaimed Greek author exiled in Sweden for more than 4 decades at age 68, visits his 92-year-old mother, who still resides in Athens. Both know that this may be one of their last encounters before her death. During the week they spend together, they reminisce about the most important things in their lives, including the presence and absence of Theodor’s father, whose life story he is reading. There, his father explains his difficult journey, from his origins as a Greek exile in Turkey through his months in a Nazi prison, and his passion for teaching.

All this reveals the history of a family through the 20th century. But Kallifatides’s book is above all a wonderful tribute to the love of his mother, depicted in an unforgettable way, while conveying a universal truth about the importance of our mothers.

Theodor Kallifatides is geboren op 12 maart 1938 in Molai, Peloponnesos in Griekenland. Hij heeft meer dan veertig werken van fictie, non-fictie en poëzie gepubliceerd, die wereldwijd zijn vertaald. Geboren in Griekenland in 1938, emigreerde Kallifatides in 1964 naar Zweden, waar hij zijn literaire carrière begon. Als vertaler heeft hij August Strindberg en Ingmar Bergman voor Griekse lezers toegankelijk gemaakt, en Giannis Ritsos en Mikis Theodorakis voor Zweedse lezers. Hij heeft talloze prijzen ontvangen voor zijn werk in zowel Griekenland als Zweden. Another Life (Other Press, 2018) en de roman The Siege of Troy (Other Press, 2019) zijn andere boeken van zijn hand die in het Engelse vertaling verkrijgbaar zijn. Hij woont in Zweden.

Afgelopen zomer keek heel Nederland naar het tv-programma B&B Vol Liefde. En als er één deelnemer uit sprong, dan was het wel voormalig stewardess Els.
