Flaptekst van het boek met Ierse reisverhalen van Ithell Colquhoun

Into the world of 1950s Ireland – a lushly green, windswept landscape studded with holy wells and the decaying country houses of a vanished ruling class – arrives Ithell Colquhoun. An occultist and a surrealist painter, Colquhoun’s travels around the island are guided by her artist’s eye and her feeling for the world beyond our own, as well as her spikily humorous view of the people she meets. We encounter faeries and pagan rituals, ruined churches and Celtic splendour, rowdy bohemians and Anglo-Irish landowners fallen on hard times, as the author carouses through Dublin and tramps the hills of Connemara in this classic travelogue.

Richly visual and full of sly wit, this is an account of Ireland as only Colquhoun could see it, a land where myth and magic meet wind and rain, and the song of the secret kingdom is heard on city streets.

Ithell Colquhoun was born on 9 October 1906 in Shillong, British India and brought up in the United Kingdom. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and started exhibiting her paintings in the 1930s, gaining some renown as one of the few women associated with British Surrealism. She began visiting Cornwall during the Second World War, and eventually moved there, continuing to write, paint, and pursue the study of the occult until her death. As well as The Crying of the Wind: Ireland, she is the author of The Living Stones: Cornwall and the novel Goose of Hermogenes, also available from Pushkin Press. She died at he age of 81 on 11 April 1988 in Cornwall.

Flaptekst van de roman uit 1922 van Edith Wharton

The power of money threatens young love in this charming story of romantic misadventure by one of the greatest authors of America’s Gilded Age.

Nick Lansing and Susy Branch are young and attractive, but penniless. Gracefully moving through New York high society, they have the right connections but none of the wealth. When they inconveniently fall in love, Susy devises a plan. They will marry and spend a year flitting across Europe, staying in the homes of their rich friends and living off honeymoon gifts until either one of them meets a better, richer prospect.

But jealous passions and troubled consciences soon cause their idyll to crumble. Told with Edith Wharton’s trademark wit, Glimpses of the Moon is a tartly amusing story of social climbing and romantic misadventure from one of our greatest writers.

Edith Wharton (24 January 1862, New York City – 11 Augustus Edith Wharton The Glimpes of the Moon first edition from 19221937, Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt, France) was born in New York, into a rich and socially prominent family. She began to write at an early age, although it was a habit viewed by her family as unsuitable for a woman of her social class. In 1885 she married Edward “Teddy” Wharton, a Boston banker. They lived a privileged life, but Wharton gradually grew dissatisfied with the roles of wife and society matron. The Whartons moved to Paris in 1907 and divorced in 1913. Edith continued to live in France, her beloved adoptive home, until her death in 1937.

Flaptekst van de roman van de Japanse schrijver Shusaku Endo

A group of Japanese tourists journey to the sacred River Ganges, each on a secret personal pilgrimage. Widower Isobe mourns for the devoted wife he neglected; gentle children’s writer Numanda seeks out the bird he believes saved his life; Kiguchi is haunted by his time as a soldier along the Highway of Death; and Mitsuko reconnects with the classmate she tempted away from the church and cruelly discarded.

At the softly lapping shores of the river – where the faithful come to bathe during their final moments – self-knowledge is sought and memories put to rest. Set against a rich backdrop of 90s India, Deep River is a beautifully moving story showing Endo at the height of his powers as a chronicler of religious experience.

Shusaku Endo (27 maart 1923, Tokio – 29 september 1996, Tokio) was one of the greatest novelists of postwar Japan. Baptised as a Roman Catholic as a child, his work explores the relationship between East and West from his unique perspective as a Japanese Christian. Endo won the Akutgawa Prize and the Yomiuri Literary Prize, was nominated for the Nobel Prize several times, and received an Order of Culture from the Japanese government. His historical fiction novel, Silence, was adapted into a 2016 film of the same name by the director Martin Scorsese.

Flaptekst van de Engelse vertaling van De avonden van Gerard Reve

‘I work in an office. I take cards out of a file. Once I have taken them out, I put them back in again. That is it.’

Twenty-three-year-old Frits – office worker, daydreamer, teller of inappropriate jokes – finds life absurd and inexplicable. He lives with his parents, who drive him mad. He has terrible, disturbing dreams of death and destruction. Sometimes he talks to a toy rabbit.

This is the story of ten evenings in Frits’s life at the end of December, as he drinks, smokes, sees friends, aimlessly wanders the gloomy city streets and tries to make sense of the minutes, hours and days that stretch before him.

Darkly funny and mesmerising, The Evenings takes the tiny, quotidian triumphs and heartbreaks of our everyday lives and turns them into a work of brilliant wit and profound beauty.

Flaptekst van de verhalenbundel Binocular Vision

Tenderly, incisively, Edith Pearlman captured life on the page like no one else. Spanning forty years of writing, moving from tsarist Russia to the coast of Maine, from Jerusalem to Massachusetts, these astonishing stories reveal one of America’s greatest modern writers.

Across a stunning array of scenes-an unforeseen love affair between adolescent cousins, an elderly couple’s decision to shoplift, an old woman’s deathbed confession of her mother’s affair-Edith Pearlman crafts a timeless and unique sensibility, shot through with wit, lucidity and compassion.

Edith Pearlman (Providence, Rhode Island, 26 juni 1936 – Brookline, Massachusetts, 1 januari 2023) published her debut collection of stories in 1996, aged 60. She won The National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction for Binocular Vision. She published over 250 works of short fiction in magazines, literary journals, anthologies and online publications.
