Herman Melville (1 augustus 1819, New York City – 28 september 1891, New York City) became in his late twenties a highly successful author of exotic novels based on his experiences as a sailor – writing in quick succession Typee, Omoo, Redburn and White-Jacket. However, his masterpiece Moby-Dick was met with incomprehension and the other later works which are now the basis of his reputation, such as Bartleby, the Scrivener and The Confidence-Man, were failures. Melville stopped writing fiction and the rest of his long life was spent first as a lecturer and then, for nineteen years, as a customs official in New York City. He was also the author of the immensely long poem Clarel, which was similarly dismissed. At the end of his life he wrote Billy Budd, Sailor which was published posthumously in 1924.

Fitzgerald followed with The Beautiful and the Damned in 1922, The Great Gatsby in 1925 and Tender is the Night in 1934. He was working on The Last Tycoon (1941) when he died, in Hollywood, in 1940.

Colorado, 1864. Star, die als kind de Sand Creek Massacre overleefde, wordt gevangen gehouden in Fort Marion Prison Castle, waar hij Engels moet leren en zich onder dwang bekeert tot het christendom. Richard Henry Pratt heeft daarin de leiding, een officier die later de Carlisle Industrial School for Indians sticht, een berucht internaat. Een generatie later gaat Charles, de zoon van Star, naar die school, waar hij wordt mishandeld door de man die ooit de gevangenbewaarder van zijn vader was. Hij is geboren in Oakland en lid van de Cheyenne- en Arapho-gemeen­schap in Oklahoma. Zijn debuutroman Er is geen daar daar werd unaniem lovend ontvangen en stond op de shortlist van de Pulitzer Prize.

Uiteindelijk nodigt hij ons uit om onze verantwoordelijkheid op te nemen. ‘Op de dag dat we de aarde zien als een gemeenschap waartoe wij behoren, zullen we misschien met liefde en respect met haar omgaan.’ Hiermee legde Leopold de filosofische basis van wat we nu ‘milieu-ethiek’ noemen. Leopolds meesterwerk verschijnt voor het eerst in Nederlandse vertaling, van de hand van Joris Capenberghs, samen met de originele tekeningen en enkele foto’s.
