The Sea is John Banville’s remarkable, Booker prize-winning exploration of memory, childhood and loss.

When art historian Max Morden returns to the seaside village where he once spent a childhood holiday, he is both escaping from a recent loss and confronting a distant trauma.

The Grace family had appeared that long-ago summer as if from another world. Mr and Mrs Grace, with their worldly ease and candour, were unlike any adults he had met before. But it was his contemporaries, the Grace twins Myles and Chloe, who most fascinated Max. He grew to know them intricately, even intimately. What happened next would haunt him for the rest of his years, and shape everything that was to follow.

John Banville was born on 8 December 1945 in Wexford, Ireland, in 1945. He is the author of many highly acclaimed and prize-winning novels including The Sea, which won the 2005 Booker Prize. Flaptekst van de Ierse vampierroman uit 1872

When lonely nineteen-year-old Laura welcomes an enigmatic stranger into her home in the heart of the Stryian forest, she has no idea that the beautiful Carmilla is not what she seems. Laura’s childhood nightmares have resurfaced, and a mysterious illness is beginning to take hold as the intimacy between the two women evolves into something more sinister.

First published in 1872, twenty-six years before Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Le Fanu introduced Carmilla, the original female vampire with a taste for innocent young women. Having influenced countless horror stories for over 150 years, this Gothic tale of dark obsession, ancient legend and wayward daughters is a classic of the genre.

Sheridan Le Fanu was born on 28 August 1814 in Dublin. He was an Irish writer, celebrated for his Gothic tales, ghost stories and mystery novels. Le Fanu\’s best-known works in the horror fiction genre include Uncle Silas (1864); his collection of stories In a Glass Darkly (1872); and the vampire novella Carmilla (1872). He died on 7 February 1873 in Dublin, at 58 years age of a heart attack.
