Zonder geld en zonder baan keert John-Calum, ‘Cal’, na zijn kunstopleiding terug naar zijn ouderlijk huis op het Schotse eiland Harris. Daar blijkt weinig veranderd – behalve hijzelf. Douglas Stuart is geboren op 31 mei 2026 in Glasgow en woont en werkt in New York. Hij schreef tien jaar aan zijn autobiografische Shuggie Bain dat door 44 uitgevers werd afgewezen. Shuggie Bain werd echter een van de meest succesvolle literaire debuten ooit. Het haalde de shortlist van o.a. de British Book Award en de National Book Award en won de Booker Prize.

Douglas Stuart was born May 31, 1976 in Sighthill, Glasgow, Scotland. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, he moved to New York, where he began a career in fashion design. Shuggie Bain, his first novel, won the Booker Prize and both ‘Debut of the Year’ and ‘Book of the Year’ at the British Book Awards. It was also shortlisted for the US National Book Award for Fiction, among many other awards. His second novel, Young Mungo, was a number one Sunday Times Bestseller. His short stories have appeared in The New Yorker and his essay on gender, anxiety and class was published by Lit Hub.

Aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw in het afgelegen Schotse vissersdorpje Skerry situeert Julia Kelly haar debuutroman. Na een heftige storm spoelt er een jongentje aan, meer dood dan levend. Dorothy, de onderwijzeres van het dorpje ontfermt zich over de jongen. Zij is zelf zelf een zoontje verloren en ze vindt dat deze jongen sprekend op hem lijkt. Misschien wel teveel alhoewel ze rationeel weet dat het hem niet kan zijn.

Haar beslissing zet gebeurtenissen in gang die haar leven en het dorp op zijn kop zet maar niet meer te stoppen zijn. Langzaam maar zeker onthult Julia Kelly het verhaal van Dorothy, hoe ze als lerares aan de slag ging in het dorp, welke problemen dit met zich meebracht, over de relatie die ze kreeg met Joseph een man uit het dorp, hoe ze een zoontje kreeg en hoe ze hem verloor.

Op kundige wijze verweeft Julia Kelly de twee verhalenlijnen tot één geheel waarbij ze geleidelijk aan steeds meer onthult. Niet te snel om de spanning in het verhaal te houden en niet te langzaam zodat ze lezer niet verliest. Je zou niet zeggen dat het boek het debuut is van de schrijfster.

De roman vertelt over rouw en verlies, aantrekkingskracht en verstoting en natuurlijk ook over de liefde en onvermijdelijke gevolgen van keuzes die hieruit voorvloeien. Kelly heeft een beeldende wijze van vertellen die ze combineert met een vrij sobere stijl. Soms balanceert de roman op het randje van sentimentaliteit maar gelukkig valt deze er nergens overheen. Kortom Geschenk van de zee is een boeiende, soms aangrijpende en goed geschreven debuutroman die het lezen waard is. Gewaardeerd met ∗∗∗∗∗ (uitstekend).

Nick Aitchison has produced the first fully researched and illustrated study of its history, mythology and cultural significance. Having first traced the origin, evolution and function of myths surrounding the Stone and the ancient prophecy that gives the Stone its name, he examines the stone itself and for the first time reveals the Stone’s original function and the origins of its symbolic sanctity.

The Stone’s historic contexts and its role in royal inauguration and coronation rituals are also discussed, including an analysis of the rich symbolism surrounding the Stone and its changing nature over time. The book concludes with a discussion of the Stone’s symbolic significance with the creation of the Scottish parliament.

Nick Aitchison took his degree (in Archaeology and Scottish History) at the University of Glasgow, where he also gained his PhD. His research interests focus on kingship and royal and religious centres in early medieval Scotland. His previous publications include Forteviot: a Pictish and Scottish Royal Centre and the critically-acclaimed Macbeth: Man and Myth. Maar Tom draagt een groot geheim met zich mee, en in een klein dorp als Lockton blijft niets lang verborgen. Zal alles instorten als Meg ontdekt wie hij werkelijk is? Het tweetal staat op het punt op pijnlijke wijze te leren dat sommige beloftes onmogelijk zijn om waar te maken.

Donna Ashcroft is een Engelse schrijfster. Ze wilde al op twaalfjarige leeftijd auteur worden. Maar voordat ze uiteindelijk besloot dat het ‘nu of nooit’ zou zijn werkte ze eerst aan andermans boeken bij een uitgeverij, in de online retail en als freelance copywriter. Haar debuutroman stond op de shortlist voor de RNA Debut Romantic Novel Award in 2019 en sindsdien heeft ze al 12 romans geschreven. Ashcroft houdt van een happy end en ontsnappen in een goede romance, in boekvorm of als film. Badlands opens with the horror of a man gradually waking to find himself fully and sharply dressed on a hotel bed in the Highlands with no memory of who he is or how he got there. And he is not alone, a secondary horror which drives him to seek the help of a girl in a pub before he takes off on a flight through the landscape in search of answers and an identity.

The plot is sustained by these two characters, the amnesiac man stumbling around the countryside and the girl in the pub, herself a stranger on a quest to unlock family secrets that are rooted in Vienna. Their paths cross and divide, stirring up fresh revelations that heighten the tension on the road to resolution.

Deirdre Chapman was born in Carnoustie, Scotland and was brought up there. She worked as a features writer for newspapers in Glasgow and London, becoming well known as a journalist. She was also highly regarded as a short story writer. She married fellow journalist Michael Grieve (1932-1995), whose parents were Valda Trevlyn Grieve and the poet Hugh MacDiarmid (pseudonym of Christopher Grieve). She brought up three sons; all the while, generously and patiently responding to the many approaches from writers and artists working with Hugh MacDiarmid’s legacy to the nation and the world. In recent years she has completed two novels. The first one The Noontide Sun was published in 2014.
