In Ierland is een vrij groot aantal bekende auteurs geboren. Vaak ligt de focus op de mannelijke auteurs uit Ierland. Maar dat is onterecht omdat Ierland ook een behoorlijk aantal vooraanstaande, lezenswaardige en zelfs beroemde schrijfsters heeft voortgebracht, zowel in vroeger tijden als in het hier en nu. Kunstenaar Nell woont op een onherbergzaam, geïsoleerd eiland met een vuurtoren, een minimarkt en een pub. Het eiland is haar thuis en vormt de inspiratie voor haar kunst, maar wordt ook geplaagd door een onverklaarbaar, haast bovennatuurlijk geluid dat uit het binnenste van de heuvels lijkt te komen. De mysterieuze Iníons, een gemeenschap van vrouwen die van over de hele wereld hun toevlucht op een afgelegen klif van het eiland hebben gezocht, noemen het geluid een Roeping.

Op een dag ontvangt Nell een brief van de Iníons, met de uitnodiging om ter ere van hun lange geschiedenis een kunstwerk voor hen te creëren. Tijdens het maken ontdekt Nell bepaalde dingen over de commune, en over zichzelf, waardoor alles wat ze dacht te weten op losse schroeven komt te staan.

Sinéad Gleeson is geboren in 1974 in Dublin. Ze is een Ierse schrijver wiens essaycollectie Hemellichamen (Constellations) non-fictieboek van het jaar werd bij de Irish Book Awards en op de shortlist stond van onder andere de Rathbones Folio Prize. Ze is tevens redacteur van de bundels The Long Gaze Back: An Anthology of Irish Women Writers en The Art of The Glimpse: 100 Irish Short Stories. In 2022 stelde ze samen met Kim Gordon This Woman’s Work: Essays on Music samen. Sinéad werkt ook met verschillende kunstenaars en musici aan performancekunst stukken en geluidsinstallaties. Heksensteen is haar debuutroman en stond op de longlist van de 2025 Dublin Literary Award.

In 2020 debuteerde ze met haar eerste roman, waarop haar tweede roman Hoe je een boot bouwt snel volgde en op de longlist voor de Booker Prize terechtkwam. Elizabeth Bowen was born in Dublin 7 June 1899, the only child of an Irish lawyer and landowner. She travelled a great deal, dividing most of her time between London and Bowen’s Court, the family house in County Cork which she inherited. Her first book, a collection of short stories, Encounters, was published in 1923. The Hotel (1927) was her first novel. In total Elizabeth Bowen wrote ten novels, short stories and non-fiction books. She was awarded the CBE in 1948, and received honorary degrees from Trinity College, Dublin in 1949, and from Oxford University in 1956. The Royal Society of Literature made her a Companion of Literature in 1965. She died in London at the age of 73 on 22 February 1973.

William Trevor was born on 24 May 1928 in Mitchelstown, County Cork, Ireland. His most recent novel Love and Summer was longlisted for the Booker Prize. He is also a renowned writer of short stories, and his two-volume Collected Stories was published by Viking Penguin in 2009. In 1999 William Trevor received the prestigious David Cohen Literature Prize in recognition of a lifetime’s literary achievement, and in 2002 he was knighted for his services to literature. He died in his sleep on 20 November 2016 in Crediton, Devon, England at the age of 88.

Edna O’Brien was born on 15 December 1930 Tuamgraney, County Clare, Ireland. She wrote more than twenty celebrated works of fiction, including her classic The Country Girls Trilogy, as well as plays and four works of non-fiction, which have been translated internationally into over 30 territories. Her final novel was the acclaimed Girl, which was awarded the Kerry Group Prize for Fiction in 2020 and was the recipient of many other literary awards. She died on 27 july 2024 in London at the age of 93 and buried on the island Inis Cealtra, County Clare in Ireland.

Ook is er aandacht voor de Nederlandse vertaling van de roman, mits deze verschenen is, uiteraard.

John McGahern was born on 12 November 1934 in Dublin. He was the eldest of seven children, raised on a farm in the West of Ireland. The son of a Garda sergeant who had served as an IRA volunteer in the Irish War of Independence, he was devastated by his mother’s death when he was nine. An outstanding student, McGahern studied at University College Dublin and became a teacher but was dismissed when his second novel The Dark was banned by the Irish Censury Board. He moved to London where he met his wife madeline Green in 1967 to whom he stayed married until his death. He wrote six novels, short stories en two memoirs. John McGahern died from cancer on 30 March 2006 in the Mater Hospital, Dublin, Ireland at the age of 71. He is buried in St Patrick’s Church, Aughawillan, alongside his mother.

De kolonie is een ontluisterende fabel over twee buitenstaanders op een afgelegen Iers eiland tijdens The Troubles.

Het is de zomer van 1979. Een Engelse schilder, meneer Lloyd, op zoek naar rust die hem de ruimte geeft om te creëren, reist naar een klein eiland voor de westkust van Ierland. Hij weet niet dat er vlak achter hem een Fransman volgt. Jean-Pierre Masson bezoekt het eiland al vele jaren en bestudeert de taal van de bewoners. Hij is fel beschermer van hun isolement en acht het essentieel voor het verkennen van zijn theorieën over taalbehoud en identiteit. Hij is dan ook niet blij met de aanwezigheid van de kunstschilder.

Beide mannen zijn naar het eiland gekomen om koste wat het kost de waarheid van deze plek te vatten – de een in zijn schilderijen, de ander door de taal ervan vast te leggen, de taal die hij hoopt te behouden. Maar de mensen op het eiland – van overgrootmoeder Bean Uí Fhloinn tot de vijftienjarige James, die een groot schildertalent blijkt te zijn – hebben hun eigen opvattingen over waarden en verlangens. Ondertussen wordt Ierland geteisterd door gewelddadige aanslagen van de IRA.

De kolonie stond op de longlist van de Booker Prize en op de shortlist van de Orwell Prize.

Audrey Magee is een Ierse romanschrijfster. Ze werkte twaalf jaar als journaliste voor onder andere The Times en The Guardian. Haar debuutroman, The Undertaking, werd genomineerd voor de Women’s Prize for Fiction, de Franse Prix du Premier Roman, de Irish Book Awards en de Dublin Literary Award. The Colony (2022) is haar tweede roman en stond onder andere op de longlist van de Booker Prize.
