He was a British-American novelist and James Hilton Goodbye, Mr. Chips First Editionscreenwriter, best-known for his novels Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Lost Horizon and Random Harvest. He co-wrote the screenplay for the wartime drama Mrs. Miniver (1942), for which he won an Academy Award. He died on 20 December 1954 in Long Beach, California in the United States of liver cancer at the age of 54.
