Kunstenaar Nell woont op een onherbergzaam, geïsoleerd eiland met een vuurtoren, een minimarkt en een pub. Het eiland is haar thuis en vormt de inspiratie voor haar kunst, maar wordt ook geplaagd door een onverklaarbaar, haast bovennatuurlijk geluid dat uit het binnenste van de heuvels lijkt te komen. De mysterieuze Iníons, een gemeenschap van vrouwen die van over de hele wereld hun toevlucht op een afgelegen klif van het eiland hebben gezocht, noemen het geluid een Roeping.

Op een dag ontvangt Nell een brief van de Iníons, met de uitnodiging om ter ere van hun lange geschiedenis een kunstwerk voor hen te creëren. Tijdens het maken ontdekt Nell bepaalde dingen over de commune, en over zichzelf, waardoor alles wat ze dacht te weten op losse schroeven komt te staan.

Sinéad Gleeson is geboren in 1974 in Dublin. Ze is een Ierse schrijver wiens essaycollectie Hemellichamen (Constellations) non-fictieboek van het jaar werd bij de Irish Book Awards en op de shortlist stond van onder andere de Rathbones Folio Prize. Ze is tevens redacteur van de bundels The Long Gaze Back: An Anthology of Irish Women Writers en The Art of The Glimpse: 100 Irish Short Stories. In 2022 stelde ze samen met Kim Gordon This Woman’s Work: Essays on Music samen. Sinéad werkt ook met verschillende kunstenaars en musici aan performancekunst stukken en geluidsinstallaties. Heksensteen is haar debuutroman en stond op de longlist van de 2025 Dublin Literary Award.

East Cork was a very dangerous area during the Irish War of Independence. Several major and minor actions between the IRA and Crown Forces took place there during 1920 and 1921, including the first RIC Barracks to be captured and destroyed at Carrigtwohill. Other significant events include the capture of Castlemartyr and Cloyne RIC barracks, the ambush at Mile Bush near Midleton where a British Army bicycle patrol was relieved of their weapons, and the IRA ambush of an RIC foot patrol in Midleton. This period also saw the first official reprisals, the disastrous battle at Clonmult, the Cobh quarry attack, and the Bunker Hill ambush.

This book includes all the major and minor engagements between the IRA and Crown Forces; the actions described have never before been so extensively researched and published in such a comprehensive and balanced fashion.

Moonyoung Hong is Assistant Professor in the School of English at the University of Hong Kong. She obtained her MPhil in Irish Writing and PhD in English at Trinity College Dublin. She is author of Tom Murphy’s Theatre of Everyday Space (Routledge, 2025) and has published in Irish Studies Review, Comparative Drama, Études Irlandaises, and Review of Irish Studies in Europe (RISE). She is on the executive committee for the Irish Society for Theatre Research (ISTR).

Perry Share is Head of School of Business and Social Sciences at Atlantic Technological University. He is a sociologist with a broad range of interests, from technology to education to food and eating. He is co-author of A sociology of Ireland and of a number of publications in the sociology of food and drink. He is an Editorial Board member of the European Journal of Food, Drink and Society and was formerly external examiner on the MA in Gastronomy and Food Studies, Technological University Dublin.

John Boyne is op 30 april 1971 geboren in de Ierse hoofdstad Dublin. Hij studeerde Engels aan het Trinity College in Dublin en aansluitend aan de University of East Anglia in Norwich, Engeland waar hij afstudeerde als Master of Arts. Inmiddels heeft John Boyne zo’n vijftien romans voor volwassen en zes romans voor young adults en twee verhalenbundels gepubliceerd. Zijn debuutroman  The Thief of Time (Dief van de tijd) verscheen in 2000. Hij is een productieve schrijver die bijna jaarlijks een nieuw boek uitbrengt. Vrijwel al zijn boeken zijn in het Nederlands vertaald.
