Dieser stirbt früh, derweil Noass’ leibliche Tochter Leontıne sich zur rebellischen Schönheit entwickelt und mit ihren Eskapaden nicht nur den eigenen Ruf aufs Spiel setzt. Davon unbeirrt fährt ihr Vater weiter zur See und häuft Reichtümer an, um der Familie ein großes Stadthaus zu bauen. Doch Hochzeiten, Kriege und Revolutionen treiben Kinder und Kindeskinder der Vējagali fort von Zunte. Jahrzehnte nach dem Bau seines Hauses stirbt Noass dort ganz allein, und im Ort verbreitet sich eine Legende: Seine Reichtümer müssen sich noch immer auf dem familiären Anwesen befinden, versteckt in einem hölzernen Bettpfosten.

Zigmunds Skujiņš erzählt überbordend und mit feinem Schalk vom wechselvollen Schicksal des lettischen Volks. Seine liebevollen, fein ausgearbeiteten Figurenzeichnungen weisen ihn als großen Menschenfreund und -kenner aus.

Whilst visiting their holiday home in the country, a family discovers a digital camera in the pocket of their grandfather’s overcoat. As their grandfather was well past taking photos or even travelling to the country at the time digital cameras became available, its presence in his pocket, stored in an old leather case no less, is mysterious – almost as mysterious as the images on the camera: pictures that he couldn’t possibly have taken; pictures of the country home from impossible angles, all of which seem to contain blurry, illuminated suggestions of a humanoid shape.

Nearly a century earlier, amidst the chaos wrought by the Russian Revolution, a Latvian soldier deserts his post and travels the country by foot, recording his many strange experiences in a small journal that he keeps hidden in his boot. His encounters with various characters lead him to develop theories on space, time, freedom, and what it means to be human. He wonders, what if time is layered, like a stack of pancakes? And what if a tree, with roots and branches that grow expansively in every direction, in fact enjoys an ideal, perfectly balanced sort of freedom?

The backdrop of this novel is a pivotal moment in Latvian history, however, its scope is much broader. Bankovskis’s story presents a wonderful exploration of what it means to be human, and the ways in which civilisation’s many products can alienate us from the natural world and from ourselves, and simultaneously drive us back into nature’s embrace.

Set in the 1960s, Nakedness is the tale of a young man who has just completed his military service and gone straight to Randava to surprise Marika, the beautiful woman with whom he’s been corresponding for some time. The two have never met in person however, and when the young man arrives at her door, he quickly becomes entangled in a bizarre mystery: Marika claims that she has never written to him; in fact, she appears to be involved with someone else. And none of her flatmates will admit to sending the letters.

Humiliated, he prepares to return to Riga, but is convinced by one of Marika’s flatmates to stay a little longer – a decision that throws him even deeper into the web of conflicting relationships he has unwittingly entered. Each clue he uncovers only makes things more confusing, and eventually the young man’s own secrets and mendacity are also revealed. The nakedness that results from being deprived of our deceptions can be unpleasant, but it may be a necessary part of growing up and facing the world.

Skujiņš is an original stylist capable of deploying acute psychological observation as well as clever and often witty imagery, and Uldis Balodis has managed to retain this in his excellent English translation. This novel will introduce the reader to a different world precisely because of the writing and the freshness of the dialogue, and not so much for the society it depicts, which resembles in some ways the mass society that also existed in Western Europe at the time, reminding us that even in those more hopeful times, the human condition was still a struggle with desires, ambitions and the image of ourselves we wish to project.
