London Calling brengt voor het eerst in Nederland een overzicht van de naoorlogse Britse schilderkunst. In samenwerking met Tate presenteert Kunstmuseum Den Haag een rijk beeld van kunstenaars als Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney en Paula Rego, verenigd door hun intense aandacht voor de menselijke figuur.

Londen vormt het gedeelde decor, maar het is vooral de verf die deze kunstenaars verbindt: schilderijen vol lichamen, blikken en binnenruimtes waarin een tijdsbeeld voelbaar wordt. Naast de bekende namen is er ruimte voor minder belichte kunstenaars zoals Celia Paul, Eva Frankfurther en Denzil Forrester. Hun werk verruimt het perspectief op wat vaak de ‘School of London’ wordt genoemd: geen vaste stroming, maar een gezamenlijke zoektocht naar hoe de wereld om ons heen te schilderen.

Though best known for Brave New World, he also wrote countless works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and essays. A humanist, pacifist and satirist, he wrote novels and other works that functioned as critiques of social norms and ideals. Aldous Huxley is often considered a leader of modern thought and one of the most important literary and philosophical voices of the 20th century. Huxley died on November 22, 1963 at the age of 69 in Los Angeles County, California in the United States.

He studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong before completing a PhD on Thom Gunn at the University of York. Also a poet, his second book of poems, As Slow As Possible was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation for Autumn 2018, one of the Guardian’s 50 biggest books in Autumn 2018, and the Irish Times Poetry Book of the Year. He was invited by the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon to be a visiting scholar in 2020. In 2018 he won a Northern Writers’ Award for Diamond Hill. He lives and works in York.

Her next book, The Magic Toyshop, won the John Llewllyn Rhys Prize and the next, Several Perceptions, the Somerset Maugham Award. She died on 16 February 1992 in London at the age of 51 from lung cancer.

Frank Baker’s avian apocalypse novel went largely unnoticed when first published, but after the release of Alfred Hitchcock’s film in 1963, Baker threatened to sue, believing the director had borrowed from his book. The text of this definitive edition of Baker’s classic is taken from his own copy of the book, in which he made hundreds of changes and corrections, never published until now. This edition also features an introduction by Hitchcock scholar Ken Mogg.

Frank Baker was born on 22 May 1908 in Hornsey, london. He was British writer of novels and short stories. His books that stand out, even today,  are the novels The Birds (1936) and Miss Hargreaves (1940) and his memoir, I Follow But Myself (1968). Frank Baker died on 6 November 1983 in Porthleven, Cornwall of cancer at the age of 75.
