In 1973 verhuisde stadsmens Herman Pieter de Boer van Amsterdam naar het markante, ook enigszins geheimzinnige dorp Giethoorn. Die overgang bracht bij hem zo’n cultuurschok teweeg dat hij verhalen ging schrijven in een genre dat nog niet bestond: kort, in klare en heldere taal, toch ongewoon, soms lieflijk, soms kluchtig boers, dan weer spookachtig griezelig, vaak met een ondertoon van erotiek en occultisme. Schilder/tekenaar Pat Andrea raakte erdoor ge pireerd en maakte illustraties bij de verhalen van Herman Pieter de Boer.

De vrouw in het maanlicht en andere verhalen verscheen voor het eerst in 1973. De vreemde, maar glashelder geschreven vertellingen bezorgden de auteur meteen een groot en aanhankelijk lezerspubliek. Jarenlang was het boek uitverkocht. Nu is De vrouw in het maanlicht en andere verhalen weer beschikbaar, natuurlijk met de originele illustraties van Pat Andrea.
