Irenosen Okojie is a Nigerian born British author. Her first novel, Butterfly Fish, and short story collections, Speak Gigantular   and Nudibranch, have won and been nominated for multiple awards. Her journalism has been featured in The New York Times, The Observer, The Guardian, and HuffPost. Vice chair of the Royal Society of Literature, she was awarded an MBE for Services to Literature in 2021. She is the director and founder of the Black to the Future festival.

Since then he has read everything he can get his hands on and spent long weekends at re-enactment fairs. He has learned to use the longbow and how to fight with the poll axe, how to start a fire with a flint and steel and a shred of baked linen. He has even helped tan a piece of leather (a disgusting experience involving lots of urine and dog faeces). Little by little he became less interested in the dealings of the high and mighty, however colourful and amazing they might have been, and more fascinated by the common folk of the 15th Century: how they lived, loved, fought and died. How tough they were, how resourceful, resilient and clever. As much as anything this book is a hymn to them.

He is the author of two novels, From Blue to Black and The Blue Mask; several short story collections, The Earth Wire, The Lost District, The Terrible Changes, Do Not Pass Go, Where Furnaces Burn, The Anniversary of Never and Scar City; a novella, The Witnesses Are Gone; and four volumes of poetry, The Edge of the Screen, Trouble in the Heartland, The Autumn Myth and Instinct. He edited three anthologies of short stories, Birmingham Noir (with Steve Bishop), Beneath the Ground and Never Again (with Allyson Bird). He won an Eric Gregory Award, two British Fantasy Awards and a World Fantasy Award. Born in Exeter in 1963, he lived most of his life in Birmingham, where he died on 26 November 2013.

He was a promising footballer before taking a teaching qualification at Loughborough. He taught PE in London and in Yorkshire before writing full time. He has written nine novels, and co-wrote the screenplay of Kes with Ken Loach. He died on 18 March 2016 in his palce of brith, Hoyland, of Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 76.

Charting her romantic and professional adventures during the First World War and beyond, the novel provoked a furore on first publication in 1928 for its lesbian heroine and led to a notorious legal trial for obscenity. Hall herself, however, saw the book as a pioneer work and today it is recognised as a landmark work of gay fiction.

This Penguin edition includes a new introduction by Maureen Duffy.

Radclyffe Hall was born on 12 August 1880 in Bournemouth, The Well of Loneliness Radclyffe Hall Lesbian Novel from 1928 First EditionHampshire, England. After an unhappy childhood, she inherited her father’s estate and from then on was free to travel and live as she chose. She fell in love and lived with an older woman before settling down with Una Troubridge, a married sculptor. Hall wrote many books but is best known for The Well of Loneliness, first published in 1928. She died in 7 October 1943 in London, 63 years of age due to cancer of the rectum and is buried in Highgate Cemetery in London.

Recensie van onze redactie

Al eerder las ik romans van Tracy Chevalier, waaronder het bekende Meisje met de parel. Ik verheugde me dus erg op het lezen van de nieuwe roman van deze geweldige schrijfter.

Het verhaal begint in 1486 in Murano, met als hoofdpersoon de jonge Orsola Rosso die deel uitmaakt van een glasblazersfamilie. Glasblazen is helemaal niet bedoeld voor vrouwen, maar na haar ontmoeting met Maria Barouvier, een vrouw uit een concurrerende glasblazersfamilie, komt daar voor Orsola verandering in. Ze gaat leren om glaskralen te maken en slaagt er in daar zo goed in te worden, dat ze er aardig mee in haar bestaan kan voorzien. Bij een bezoek aan Venetië leert Orsola Antonio kennen, die door haar broer Marco is uitgenodigd als glasblazer in de leer te gaan op Murano. Iets wat heel ongebruikelijk is, want de Muranezen houden het glasblazen liever onder hen.

Wat ik een heel leuke en vooral ook slimme twist aan dit boek vond, was de lange levensduur van Orsola. Het verhaal begint in 1486 en eindigt pas in de huidige tijd. Orsola werd maar heel langzaam ouder. Een verrassende en boeiende manier om een heel groot stuk van de historie van Murano en het glasblazen te vertellen. Een boeiende, leerzame en kleurrijke achtergrond voor het levensverhaal van de Rosso’s. Een prettig geschreven verhaal met veel kleurrijke personages. Chevalier is een uitstekende verhalenvertelster en door de twist met de tijd blijft het boeiend om een verhaal dat zich uitstrekt over 5 eeuwen te lezen. Ik vond het ook heel leuk om meer te leren over de geschiedenis van glas en Venetië.

Ik heb genoten van deze roman en hem achter elkaar uitgelezen! De roman is gewaardeerd met ∗∗∗∗∗ (uitstekend).

First published in 1929, Wolf Solent was the first in John Cowper Powys’ great sequence of visionary works of fiction, set in Hardy’s Wessex but a Wessex now ravaged by the impact of the Great War and the curse of modernity. Both a lyrical story of the English countryside and an agonised account of life and love in the shadow of monstrous change, Wolf Solent is a cult novel like no other.

John Cowper Powys was born on 8 Octobre 1872 in Shirley, Derbyshire, Engeland was a novelist and poet. He lived a highly itinerant life, including some years as a successful lecturer criss-crossing the USA and Canada. His major novels include Wolf Solent, A Glastonbury Romance, Weymouth Sands and Maiden Castle. He died on 17 June 1963 in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales, 90 years of age.
