Elizabeth Strout (6 januari 1956, Portland, Maine, Verenigde Staten) schreef onder andere Olive Kitteridge, Ik heet Lucy Barton en Niets is onmogelijk. Olive Kitteridge werd met de Pulitzerprijs bekroond en door HBO tot een miniserie gemaakt. Richard Wright werd op 4 september 1908 geboren in Roxie in de Zuidelijke staat Mississippi maar zijn kinderjaren bracht hij grotendeels door in Memphis, Tennessee, later in een weeshuis en bij familie. Op vijftienjarige leeftijd vertrok hij naar Chicago waar hij vanaf 1935 deelnaam aan het Federal Writers’ Project.

In 1938 debuteerde hij met de roman Uncle Tom’s Children en het jaar erop ontving hij een Guggenheim Fellowship. Tot zijn dood op 28 november 1960 in Parijs, waar hij met zijn vrouw en dochters naar de Tweede Wereldoorlog woonde, publiceerde hij romans en een aantal autobiografische non-fictie boeken. Hij wordt gezien als één van de belangrijkste zwarte Amerikaanse schrijvers van de vorige eeuw.

Margaret Ann “Lionel” Shriver is op 18 mei 1957 geboren in het stadje Gastonia in de Amerikaanse staat North Carolina. Ze is afkomstig uit een zeer religieus gezin en haar vader was een presbyteriaanse predikant. Toen ze vijftien was veranderde ze haar voornaam in Lionel omdat ze zich als tomboy zag en een mannelijke naam beter bij haar paste. Aan het Barnard College van Columbia University in New York studeerde ze Engels en Russisch. Enkele jaren nadat ze haar studie had afgerond ging ze als journalist aan de slag voor The Economist en The Guardian, In deze periode woonde en werkte ze zo’n twaalf jaar in de Noord-Ierse stad Belfast.

In 1987 debuteerde ze met de roman The Female of the Species dat niet in het Nederlands is vertaald. Tot haar roman We Need to Talk About Kevin (We moeten het over Kevin hebben) die in 2003 verscheen duurde het voordat er werk in Nederlandse vertaling werd uitgegeven, wat ook gold voor vrijwel alle romans die erna verschenen. Haar nieuwste roman die in 2024 in de Verenigde Staten verschijnt met de titel Mania zal naar verwachting in juni 2024 in Nederlandse vertaling verkrijgbaar zijn met als titel Waanzin. It is an epic of what might be called the Arabian Nights of American life. Marguerite Young’s method is poetic, imagistic, incantatory; in prose of extraordinary richness she tests the nature of her characters—and the nature of reality.

The novel is written with oceanic music moving at many levels of consciousness and perception; but the toughly fibred realistic fabric is always there, in the happenings of the narrative, the humor, the precise details, the definitions of the characters. Miss MacIntosh herself, who hails from What Cheer, Iowa, and seems downright and normal, with an incorruptible sense of humor and the desire to put an end to phantoms; Catherine Cartwheel, the opium lady, a recluse who is shut away in a great New England seaside house and entertains imaginary guests; Mr. Spitzer, the lawyer, musical composer and mystical space traveler, a gentle man, wholly unsure of himself and of reality; his twin brother Peron, the gay and raffish gambler and virtuoso in the world of sports; Cousin Hannah, the horsewoman, balloonist, mountain-climber and militant Boston feminist, known as Al Hamad through all the seraglios of the East; Titus Bonebreaker of Chicago, wild man of God dreaming of a heavenly crown; the very efficient Christian hangman, Mr. Weed of the Wabash River Valley; a featherweight champion who meets his equal in a graveyard—these are a few who live with phantasmagorical vividness in the pages of Miss MacIntosh, My Darling.

The novel touches on many aspects of life—drug addiction, woman’s suffrage, murder, suicide, pregnancy both real and imaginary, schizophrenia, many strange loves, the psychology of gambling, perfectionism; but the profusion of this huge book serves always to intensify the force of the central question: “What shall we do when, fleeing from illusion, we are confronted by illusion?” What is real, what is dream? Is the calendar of the human heart the same as that kept by the earth? Is it possible that one may live a secondary life of which one does not know?

A descendent of Brigham Young, Marguerite Young was born in Indiana on 26 August 1909 and spent most of her life in Greenwich Marguerite Young Miss MacIntosh, My Darling first edtion 1965Village, where she associated with writers like Richard Wright, Carson McCullers Truman Capote, and Gertrude Stein. In addition to Miss MacIntosh, My Darling she published two works of poetry, a work of nonfiction (Angel in the Forest), a collection of essays and stories (Inviting the Muses) and Harp Song for a Radical: The Life and Times of Eugene Victor Debs, which was published posthumously. Sge died 17 November 1995 at the age of 87 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
