Pandit was India’s first woman cabinet minister, an ambassador to the United States and the Soviet Union, and the first woman elected president of the UN General Assembly. Her influence extended well beyond these formal roles: she became one of the most prominent international voices for peace while paving the way for women in many fields. Based on eight years of research using material in five languages from seven countries, this book tells Madame Pandit’s gripping story in full—and in so doing, retells the history of India and the world in the twentieth century.

Manu Bhagavan was born in 1970. He is an Indian-American professor of history, human rights, and public policy at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he is also a senior fellow at the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies. Bhagavan is the author or editor of several books, including The Peacemakers: India and the Quest for One World (2012) and India and the Cold War (2019).

Banu Mushtaq is a writer, activist and lawyer in the state of Karnataka, southern India. Mushtaq began writing within the progressive protest literary circles in southwestern India in the 1970s and 1980s: critical of the caste and class system, the Bandaya Sahitya movement gave rise to influential Dalit and Muslim writers, of whom Mushtaq was one of the few women.  She is the author of six short story collections, a novel, an essay collection and a poetry collection. She writes in Kannada and has won major awards for her literary works, including the Karnataka Sahitya Academy and the Daana Chintamani Attimabbe awards. Previously translated into Urdu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam, the first book-length translation of her work into English will be Heart Lamp: Selected Stories, to be published in 2025, while one of the stories from Heart Lamp has been published in the Paris Review.

Als je op het omslag van een veel superlatieven leest, dan ben je bij lezing ervan vaak op je hoede. Ook het boek Leeft een rivier? van de Britse schrijver Robert Macfarlane bevat nogal wat loftuitingen. In dit geval volkomen terecht want dit boek is aangrijpend, verontrustend en bovenal geschreven in een prachtige stijl die je meesleept van het eerste tot laatste woord.

Macfarlaine vertelt het verhaal van de teloorgang van de rivier op drie plekken in de wereld in Ecuador, India en Canada. Hij heeft aandacht voor al het leed dat de rivier wordt aangedaan en de vernietigende rol die de mens hierin speelt. Daarnaast is het een ode aan de rivier als levensader, verhalenverteller, bron van energie en niet te vergeten de mensen die diep doordrongen zijn van de kracht en schoonheid en deze bijna ten koste van alles willen beschermen.

Een zoektocht naar de duistere geschiedenis van opium.

Toen Amitav Ghosh onderzoek deed voor zijn romantrilogie over opium was hem al duidelijk hoe die kleine plant, de papaverplant, de loop van de wereldgeschiedenis heeft beïnvloed. Na De vloek van de nootmuskaat is hij er opnieuw in gedoken en ontdekte hij dat zelfs zijn eigen identiteit en familiegeschiedenis onmiskenbaar verweven zijn met papaver. De handel in opium werd opgezet door het Britse Rijk, maar ook de VOC verdiende haar geld ermee. Ghosh vindt opium zelfs terug bij het ontstaan van enkele van de grootste bedrijven en machtigste families en prestigieuze instellingen ter wereld.

Rook en as is tegelijkertijd een reisverslag, een essay over kolonialisme, kapitalisme, drugs en verslaving en een traktaat over wie de macht heeft om de geschiedenis op te schrijven. Bovenal is het een verhaal over wortels, over hoe de wereld zoals we die kennen ontsproot aan die éne kleine plant, die in de handen van Ghosh bijna zelf een romanpersonage wordt.

Paul Scott Staying On Winnaar Booker Prize 1977Paul Scott was born in London in 25 March 1920. He served in the army from 1940 to 1946, mainly in India and Malaya. He is the author of thirteen distinguished novels including his famous The Raj Quartet. In 1977, Staying On won the Booker Prize. Paul Scott died on 1 March 1978 in London.
