De gouden roos begint met een verhaal over een vuilnisman in Parijs. Dagelijks veegde hij de werkplaatsen van juweliers aan en zeefde hij uit het stof en vuil het goudslijpsel, totdat hij genoeg had verzameld om er een gouden roos van te laten maken. Het is het vertrekpunt voor Paustovski’s zoektocht naar het goudstof waaruit hij zelf zijn verhalen smeedde.

Onder de noemer ‘notities over het werk van een schrijver’ brengt Paustovski zijn persoonlijke literaire herinneringen en ervaringen in dit boek bijeen. Henry Beston was born on 1 June 1888 in Quincy, Massachusetts and educated at Harvard. He wrote many books in his lifetime, including a memoir of his years in the volunteer ambulance corps in the First World War, an account of life in the US Navy and a book of fairy tales. The Outermost House, widely considered his masterpiece, was published in 1928. His Cape Cod house was named a National Literary Landmark in 1964, and it was destroyed by a huge winter storm in 1978. He died at the age of 79 in Nobleboro, Maine.

Abandoning the Cotswolds village that raised him, the young Laurie Lee walks to London. There he makes a living labouring and playing the violin. But, deciding to travel further a field and knowing only the Spanish phrase for ‘Will you please give me a glass of water?’, he heads for Spain. With just a blanket to sleep under and his trusty violin, he spends a year crossing Spain, from Vigo in the north to the southern coast. Only the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War puts an end to his extraordinary peregrinations.

Laurie Lee was born on 24 Juni 1914 in Stroud, Gloucestershire in Engeland. Hehas written some of the best-loved travel books in the English language. Born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 1914, he was educated at Slad village school and Stroud Central School. At the age of nineteen he walked to London and then travelled on foot through Spain, where he was trapped by the outbreak of the Civil War. He later returned by crossing the Pyrenees, as he recounted in A Moment of War. He died on 13 May 1997 is Slad, Gloucestershire, aged 82. He published four collections of poems: The Sun My Monument (1944), The Bloom of Candles (1947), My Many-Coated Man (1955) and Pocket Poets (1960). His other works include The Voyage of Magellan (1948), The Firstborn (1964), I Can’t Stay Long (1975), and Two Women (1983). He also wrote three bestselling volumes of autobiography: Cider with Rosie (1959), which has sold over six million copies worldwide, As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) and A Moment of War (1991).

Audre Lorde is geboren op 8 februari 1934 in New York. Ze was een Amerikaanse schrijver, activiste en dichter. Enkele andere van haar bekendste werken zijn Sister Outsider (essays), The Black Unicorn (gedichten) en The Cancer Journals (non-fictie). Ze overleed op 17 november 1992 in  Saint Croix op de Amerikaanse Maagdeneilanden aan de gevolgen van kanker.

Nury Turkel was born in a ‘re-education’ camp in China at the height of the Cultural Revolution. He spent the first several months of his life in captivity with his mother, who was beaten and starved while pregnant with him, whilst his father served a penal sentence in an agricultural labour camp. Following this traumatic start – and not without a heavy dose of good fortune – he was later able to travel to the US for his undergraduate studies in 1995 and was granted asylum in the country in 1998 where, as a lawyer, he is now a tireless and renowned activist for the plight of his people.

Nury Turkel is a lawyer and Uyghur rights advocate based in Washington, DC. He is currently serving as vice chair for the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and serves as chairman of the board for the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), which he cofounded in 2003. In September 2020, Nuryl was named one of the TIME 100 Most Influential People in the World, and in May 2021, he was named on Fortune’s List of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.

Along with writing speeches and jokes for political figures, athletes, Fortune 500 CEOs, and philanthropists, David was the head writer/producer at Funny Or Die, DC, and has written and sold comedy pilots for Comedy Central, ABC, and NBC. He and his wife divide their time between Washington, DC, and Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Recollections, as a great woman once said, may of course vary, but this is my story, the way I remember it, written with no fear, no favour – and no fucks left to give.

Buckle up.

I thought long and hard about writing this memoir. I’ve done so not to settle old scores or plead my case, but more because I hope it’s a tale worth telling, not just for those who are interested in the political events of the past few years, but also because it’s about the people and characters behind those events, and why things ended up the way they did.

For nearly 20 years I was inside the rooms of government, a sanctioned eavesdropper on the rise – and fall – of the Cameroon style of Conservatism. At the same time I was building a career in journalism, raising two children and doing my best to support my own husband, Michael Gove, on his political journey. I was both an insider and an outsider; an observer – via my journalism – as well as a participant in the cut and thrust (mainly cut, if I’m honest) of frontline politics.

After my divorce from Michael and the demise of the Conservatives’ Old Guard, that all came to an end. I’m no longer officially a Westminster WAG, but you won’t find me mourning. Politics trampled my health, my happiness, my marriage, my sanity; it placed intolerable pressure on my loved ones, especially my children; it twisted my sense of self, and others’ sense of me; it tainted everything I did or said. I can’t say I miss it. I do, however, miss the life and the relationships I had before it all. These are the recollections of a survivor, but they are also a love letter to all that was lost in the wreck.

Sarah Vine was born in Wales in 1967. She moved as a child to Italy, returning to the UK as a teenager. Sarah read Modern Languages at UCL before moving into journalism, starting at the Daily Mirror before joining The Times, where she worked for 15 years. It was there that she met Michael Gove, then Comment Editor, before he became an MP and senior Cabinet minister. They married in 2001 before parting ways in 2021. They remain on friendly terms, and co-parent their two children, Beatrice and William. Sarah now lives in London with the kids and (too many) animals.

How were the lands ‘lost’? The author laments the decline and fall of a succession of cultures, from the Celtic principality of Pengwern and the mighty kingdom of Mercia to the end of heavy industry in the late twentieth century. With a thoughtful foreword by Robert Plant, West takes history to a new imaginative edge.

Martin Wall inherited his passionate interest in local history and folklore from his father and has been writing about these subjects for ten years. He lectures historical groups on a variety of subjects and acts as a gallery interpreter in his spare time. He is the author of ‘Warriors and Kings’, ‘The Anglo Saxon Age’ and ‘The Magical History of Britain’.
