Het leven in Rome is nooit gewoon, het is of je om de haverklap een filmscène binnenloopt, soms zelfs letterlijk zoals op de Piazza Navona waar Woody Allen aan het draaien is of bij een berucht café waar de moord op een Romeinse maffiabaas wordt nagespeeld.

Rosita Steenbeek neemt ons mee naar een diner in het Quirinaal waar dertig pausen woonden en nu de president, maar ook naar een lunch met daklozen in een tot eetzaal omgevormde kerk. Ze viert de 2769ste verjaardag van Rome aan de nachtelijke Tiber, wordt geïnterviewd door de bisschoppelijke televisiezender over fietsen en ziet de paus met een helikopter de stoel van Petrus verlaten.

De caleidoscopische reis voert ook terug in de tijd, naar een parkeergarage in antieke paardenstallen, een metrostation in het muziekpaleis van keizer Hadrianus en een eeuwenoude apotheek met een medicijn waar keizer Nero al bij zwoer. We zien schatten uit het Vaticaanse Geheim Archief en ontdekken dat Rome een van de groenste steden is. Wanneer de stad een pretpark lijkt te worden legt corona het leven stil en is Rome even met zichzelf alleen.

Op zondag 8 april 1945 wordt in het ‘Capitol’ in Halberstadt bij de matineevoorstelling de beroemde speelfilm Thuiskomst getoond. Mevrouw Schrader start de voorstelling pünktlich om tien uur. Net na de patriottische reclame begint plotseling het doek te trillen en een ogenblik later wordt ze door de luchtverplaatsing naar een hoek onder het balkon gekatapulteerd. Boven zich ziet ze de blauwe hemel met een geweldige rookpluim. Nu de grote luchtalarm-schep pakken, denkt ze, en de bioscoop gereedmaken voor de voorstelling van twee uur! Maar de volgende Bomber-staffel dwingt haar tot andere gedachten.

Een tuinman loopt achter paard-en-wagen met daarop vier doodskisten door het puin naar de begraafplaats. Zijn loon: een fles zwartebessenjenever, vier eieren en twee braadworstjes. Wanneer hij de volgende staffel Britten ziet aanvliegen, zoekt hij dekking in een greppel en doet een vroeg dutje, omdat het een dag met overuren zal worden.

Zuivelwinkel Henze staat in vlammen. De eigenaar probeert met de buren eieren, margarine, kaas, boter en honing te redden, terwijl de vier kinderen van lerares Baethke naast haar op de grond gefascineerd kijken hoe de specerijen naar beneden donderen.

Scène na scène, de een nog verrassender dan de ander, laat Kluge de Halberstadttaferelen van deze zonnige 8 april op bijna filmische wijze aan de lezer voorbijtrekken. Zijn semi-documentaire beschrijving van het apocalyptische vernielingswerk van de geallieerde bombardementen stelt de vraag, waartoe de mensen te midden van dit inferno in staat zijn en voor welke uitwegen zij kiezen, uitwegen naar een ‘gelukkige toekomst’.

All things considered, though, it is hard to find a more dynamic and optimistic country or, as Arundhati Roy puts it, “a more irredeemably chaotic people.” This volume aims to depict India’s chaos and its contradictions, its terror and its joy, from the struggle of the Kashmiri people to that of non-believers (hated by all religious sects), from the dances of the hijra in Koovagam to the success of the wrestler Vinesh Phogat, a symbol of the women who seek to free themselves from the oppressive patriarchal mores.
