Surrounded by a gaggle of aunts who love and teach her, Ainhoa narrates moments that evoke the powerful presence of music and dance in her daily life while also confronting familial violence over the course of Carnaval season. Seen through Ainhoa’s innocent eyes, the difficult themes that have defined the South American country’s recent history, including economic hardship, migration, and upheaval, are but one side of an enormous cultural richness steeped in the joy, music, and vibrancy of this singular community of women.

Following the contours of Carnaval, and sublimely translated by Madeleine Arenivar, Yuliana Ortiz Ruano’s sensorial and viscerally alive novel brims with poetry and exuberance, as well as the pain of an existence lived in the forgotten corners of the world. Carnaval Fever is the introduction of an important new voice in Latin American letters, available in English for the first time.

Yuliana Ortiz Ruano was born in 1992 in Esmeraldas, Ecuador. She is an Afro music DJ. A novelist and a poet, she is the author of the collections Sovoz, Canciones desde el fin del mundo, and Cuaderno del imposible retorno a Pangea. Carnaval Fever won the Joaquín Gallegos Lara National Fiction Prize, the Primo Romanzo Latinoamericano Award, and the PEN Presents English PEN Award.

Breadfruit trees are staples of the tropics, bearing cantaloupe-sized green-skinned fruits whose taste and texture resemble potatoes. More than three thousand years ago, breadfruit fueled the Pacific voyages of discovery that settled islands throughout Oceania. In the late eighteenth century, the British expedition that ended with the mutiny on the Bounty aimed, but failed, to introduce breadfruit to the West Indies as food for enslaved African laborers on sugar plantations. A later voyage resulted in the fruit’s widespread distribution and complicated role within modern Caribbean food cultures. In recent years, breadfruit has been touted as a tool for sustainable development and as a “superfood” with both health benefits and culinary versatility.

Russell Fielding tells these stories and many others, exploring breadfruit’s fascinating global history and varied present-day uses. Bringing together extensive research and vivid travelogues, including learning directly from local agriculturists, chefs, scientists, and holders of traditional knowledge, he provides an immersive narrative of breadfruit’s contributions. Fielding argues that breadfruit’s history comprises two journeys: first, from its origins in Southeast Asia across the Pacific; and second, its transplantation to the Caribbean. Today, a third journey is taking place, one that is spreading breadfruit throughout the world.

Engagingly written and compellingly argued, this book draws timely lessons from breadfruit’s past to forecast its future potential.

Russell Fielding is an associate professor in the HTC Honors College at Coastal Carolina University. He is a geographer who studies sustainable food systems in the world’s coastal and island settings. Fielding is the author of The Wake of the Whale: Hunter Societies in the Caribbean and North Atlantic (2018).

Its precarious existence in captivity and the wild exposes how Western and Indigenous approaches to conservation can—and must—find common ground for its survival.

Simon Pooley is the Lambert Lecturer in Environment at Birkbeck, University of London. He is the coeditor of Histories of Bioinvasions in the Mediterraneanand the author of Burning Table Mountain: An Environmental History of Fire on the Cape Peninsula.

Lee observes how racial prejudices are developed and manifested through interracial and transnational intimate desires and encounters.

This book is the first to examine the interracial relationships between Hallyu tourists and Korean men. Furthermore, it is the first to analyze Korea as a popular romance tourist destination for heterosexual women. Finding Mr. Perfect illuminates South Korean popular culture’s transnational fandom and tourism as a global phenomenon where fantasies and realities converge to have a tangible impact on individual lives.

Benjamin Franklin was gouverneur van de staat Pennsylvania en een van de ondertekenaars van de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring. Hij maakte zich sterk voor de afschaffing van de slavernij. Hij was een succesvol schrijver, uitgever, diplomaat, filosoof, uitvinder en experimenteel wetenschapper. Beroemd is zijn poging om met een vlieger de bliksem te geleiden.

Franklin startte zijn carrière als drukkersknecht en klom op tot staatsman. Toen hij in 1776 Frankrijk bezocht, stonden juichende menigten hem op te wachten. Men beschouwde hem als het toonbeeld van de gelukkige en optimistische Verlichtingsmens.

Benjamin Franklin is geboren op 17 januari 1706 in Boston. Hij was een veelzijdig mens en behoorde tot de zogenaamde Founding Fathers van de Verenigde Staten. Naast politiek denker en diplomaat was hij ook uitvinder. Hij bedacht onder meer bifocale brillenglazen en de bliksemafleider. Hij wees als eerste op het bestaan van golfstromen en ontwikkelde een eigen theorie over elektriciteit. Hij overleed op 17 april 1790 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, waar hij ook begraven is, en werd 84 jaar oud.

David Szalay is in 1974 geboren in Montreal, Canada. Hij is een schrijver om te onthouden. In 2016 werd de Hongaars-Engelse schrijver genomineerd voor de Booker Prize met zijn roman Wat een man is, en hij wordt genoemd als een van Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists.
