Naast zijn grote romans en verhalen heeft Thomas Mann een niet minder indrukwekkend oeuvre gecreëerd van essays, artikelen en toespraken waarin hij zich kritisch uitspreekt over de culturele, sociale en politieke trends van zijn tijd. Achtung Europa! bevat een aantal essays uit de jaren dertig waarin Thomas Mann zijn lezers waarschuwt voor het opkomende fascisme. Al in een vroeg stadium doorziet hij haarscherp de gewelddadige aard van het fascisme en het gevaar voor democratie en rechtsstaat. Het boek verscheen in 1938, toen Mann als consequentie van zijn zelfgekozen ballingschap naar de vs was geëmigreerd.

Thomas Mann is geboren op 6 juni 1875 in de Duitse Havenstad Lübeck. Hij is de schrijver van ongeëvenaarde romans als De Toverberg, De Buddenbrooks, Lotte in Weimar en Doctor Faustus. In 1929 ontving hij de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur. Achtung, Europa! verscheen oorspronkelijk in 1938. Hij overleed op 12 augustus 1955 in Zürich, Zwitserland.
