Sabahattin Ali was born on 25 Februari 1907 in the Ottoman town of Egridere (now Ardino in southern Bulgaria). A teacher, novelist, short-story writer and journalist, he owned and edited a popular weekly newspaper called Marko Pasa. He is admired for the determination with which he defended his political beliefs, which are anchored through his writing. Madonna in A Fur Coat, first published in 1943, is his best loved work and a touchstone of Turkish literary culture which continues to resonate profoundly with readers young and old today. He was killed on 2 April 1948 in Kırklareli, Turkey, on the Bulgarian border, only 41 years of age.

Seicho Matsumoto werd geboren in 1909 in Fukuoka, Japan. Zijn Japanse naam is 松本 清張. Als autodidact publiceerde  Matsumoto zijn eerste boek toen hij veertig jaar oud was en hij vestigde zich al snel als een meester in misdaadfictie. Zijn verkenning van de menselijke psychologie en de Japanse naoorlogse malaise, gecombineerd met het creëren van kronkelende, duistere mysteries, maakten hem tot een van de meest geprezen en best verkochte schrijvers in Japan. Hij ontving de prestigieuze Akutagawa Literatuurprijs in 1950 en de Kikuchi Kan-prijs in 1970. Hij stierf op 4 augustus 1992 op 82-jarige leeftijd aan kanker in het Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital.

Willa Cather was born on 7 December 1873 in Gore, Virginia. She Willa Cather The Song of the Lark first editionwas an American writer best known for her novels of the Plains and for One of Ours, a novel set in World War I, for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1923. She was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1943 and received the gold medal for fiction from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1944. By the time of her death in 1947 she had written twelve novels, five books of short stories, and a collection of poetry. She died on 24 April 1947 in New York City, 73 years of age.

Mário de Andrade (9 October 1893, São Paulo – 25 February 1945, São Paulo) was a Brazilian writer, born in São Paulo, best known for the gleefully anarchic rhapsody Macunaíma, the Hero with No Character (1928). A polymath of his era, he was trained as a musician but became equally influential in fiction, poetry, photography, and art criticism. He served as the founding director of São Paulo’s Department of Culture and helped organize and participated in the Semana de Arte Moderna (Week of Modern Art) in 1922, an event that would be central to the birth of modernism in Brazil. A key thread of Andrade’s work involved the recognition and preservation of Afro-Brazilian cultures and traditions.
