Recensie van de redactie

De gelauwerde Britse schrijver Geoff Dyer heeft al een flink aantal romans en andere boeken gepubliceerd voordat hij zich waagde aan het beschrijven van zijn eigen jeugd en pubertijd. Maar gelukkig is het nu zo ver met het verschijnen van Huiswerk. Het boek is een boeiend autobiografisch verslag van een jeugd in het Engeland van de jaren zeventig en tachtig van de vorige eeuw. Maar niet alleen dat het is bovenal het verhaal van wat het betekende om op te groeien in de standenmaatschappij die zeker toen de Britse samenleving, maar eigenlijk tot op de dag van vandaag zo kenmerkt.

Geoff Dyer probeert, ondanks de nodige weerstand, zich enigszins los te maken van de beperkingen van zijn eigen afkomst. Gemakkelijk gaat dit zeker niet en het blijkt een strijd die heel wat volharding en uithoudingsvermogen vergt. Op prettige wijze, met een aangename pen en in een stijl die uitnodigt om verder te lezen laat Geoff Dyer de lezer bijna zelf ervaren wat het bekende om op te groeien zoals hij deed.

De memoir slaagt er goed in om de consequenties van de Britse standenmaatschappij invoelbaar te maken ook voor buitenstaanders die er zelf niet mee te maken hebben, alhoewel als je goed tussen de regels doorleest is het boek universeler dan bij oppervlakkige lezing lijkt. Geoff Dyer heeft een geslaagde en gelaagde memoir geschreven die gewaardeerd is met ∗∗∗∗∗ (uitstekend).

Geoff Dyer wordt in de jaren jaren vijftig geboren in Cheltenham als enig kind van een kokkin en een bouwkundig ingenieur. Hij groeit op in een arbeiderswijk, en heeft het daar zeer naar zijn zin. Op zijn elfde wordt hij toegelaten tot een grammar school, een middelbare school die hem voorbereidt op de universiteit. Die stap verandert zijn leven drastisch. Als opgroeiende student, die naar optredens gaat en zijn eerste romances beleeft, voelt hij de culturele afstand tussen hem en zijn afkomst steeds groter worden – een afstand die hij met dit meesterlijke boek op heel vindingrijke en creatieve manier probeert te verkleinen.

Geoff Dyer is geboren op 5 juni 1958 in Cheltenham, Engeland. geldt als een van de beste Engelstalige non-fictieschrijvers van het moment. Zijn werk werd veelvuldig bekroond en werd inmiddels vertaald in 24 talen. Bij TZARA verschenen eerder De laatste dagen van Roger Federer en Uit pure woede.

Toen acteur en schrijver Frans van Deursen werd gevraagd vijf van Shakespeares sonnetten voor te lezen tijdens een sonnettenmarathon, ging hij op zoek naar vertalingen die voor voordracht geschikt zijn, maar vond die niet.

Niet gespeend van een gezonde dosis overmoed ging hij zelf aan de slag. Hij kreeg algauw de smaak te pakken en besloot alle 154 sonnetten te vertalen. Al sinds zijn jongensjaren is Maarten Asscher gefascineerd door Oscar Wilde, door zijn werk en ook door zijn leven. Er zijn duizenden studies en honderden biografieën over deze cultfiguur geschreven, maar nog nooit is het raadsel opgelost van de gouden crucifix die Wilde als student in 1876 aan zijn eerste grote liefde Florence Balcombe schonk. Twee jaar later verrast ze Oscar door plotseling te trouwen met een andere jonge schrijver uit Dublin, Bram Stoker, de toekomstige auteur van Dracula.

In een vermakelijke biografische vertelling, die nog het meest lijkt op een detectiveachtig speurtocht, doet Maarten Asscher een poging de raadsels van deze Victoriaanse liefdesdriehoek op te lossen. Het resultaat werpt een verrassend licht in de duistere hoeken van Bram Stokers vampiristische fantasie, en het boek is tegelijk een schitterende ode aan de verbeelding.

Maarten Asscher is op 29 juni 1957 geboren in Alkmaar. Hij is de auteur van verhalenbundels, essays, columns, poëzie en non-fictie. Zijn eerste roman, Het uur en de dag (2005), was binnen één jaar al aan vijf herdrukken toe. Voordat hij zich fulltime aan het schrijven wijdde, was Maarten Asscher uitgever (Meulenhoff), directeur Kunsten bij het ministerie van OCW en onafhankelijk literair en academisch boekverkoper (Athenaeum Boekhandel). In 2015 promoveerde hij aan de Universiteit Leiden op een onderzoek naar gevangenschap als literaire ervaring (Het uur der waarheid). In 2019 ontving hij de vijfjaarlijkse J.H. Donnerprijs vanwege zijn bijzondere verdiensten voor het Nederlandse boekenvak. In 2022 verscheen zijn derde roman, De schaduw van een vriend , een filmische roman over een old boys network dat onder druk komt te staan. In 2025 verschijnt Oscar Wilde’s crucifix , zowel in een Nederlandse als in een Engelse versie.

Horace Walpole (24 September 1717, London – 2 March 1797, London), 4th Earl of Orford, was the son of the Whig Prime Minister, Robert Walpole. In 1747 he moved to Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, which he transformed into his “little Gothic castle”. He was at the centre of literary and political society and an arbiter of taste. He is remembered for his witty letters to a wide circle of friends.

One afternoon many years ago, James Rebanks met an old woman on a remote Norwegian island. She lived and worked alone on a tiny rocky outcrop, caring for wild Eider ducks and gathering their down.
