De zestienjarige Theo, met zijn getemde kraai, probeert met hulp van zijn buurjongen Freddie indruk te maken op de twee rijkeluiszoontjes Van Hal, maar die spelen een ondoorgrondelijk spel met hem. Als Theo voor de politie op de vlucht is, duikt hij onder in de toren van de grote villa van de broers. Langzaam begint hij zich af te vragen of hij ondergedoken zit of gevangen wordt gehouden. Thomas Rosenbooms karakteristieke stijl geeft deze psychologische roman, die deels gebaseerd is op de beruchte Baarnse moordzaak, een bloedstollende spanning.

Thomas Rosenboom is geboren op 8 januari 1956 in Doetinchem. Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin (14 October 1879, Talbingo, New South Wales – 19 September 1954, Drummoyne, New South Wales) Miles Franklin My Brilliant Career novel from 1901was born in Old Talbingo, Australia. Despite a difficult and isolated childhood – she grew up in the impoverished bush regions of New South Wales, with limited education – she completed her first book at the age of just nineteen. The ironically titled My Brilliant Career (1901) was published under a male pseudonym, to immediate success and acclaim. Its story of an impassioned, ambitious heroine frustrated by rural bush life resonated with young Australian women and established Franklin as a bold new feminist voice in literature.

Following the publication of her debut novel, Franklin moved to Sydney, then on to America and Britain. She wrote and published a total of nineteen books across her lifetime, as well as working as an editor and women’s advocate in organisations such as the National Women’s Trade Union League. Her endowment of a major literary award – the Miles Franklin Award – has consolidated her legacy in Australian literary life.

Mijn vrienden en Armand, de eerste twee romans van de Franse schrijver Emmanuel Bove, lijken wel tweelingen. Victor Bâton, de verteller van Mijn vrienden en van het ook in dit boek opgenomen korte verhaal Een andere vriend, is wanhopig op zoek naar een vriend. Telkens als hij iemand ontmoet, draait het op een mislukking uit. Bâton kan niet alleen leven, maar samenleven lukt hem ook niet. Armand woont ongemakkelijk samen met Jeanne, een tien jaar oudere vrouw die hem uit de goot heeft gehaald. Wanneer hij op een dag zijn kameraad van vroeger weer tegen het lijf loopt, begint een huiveringwekkende ondergang.

Victor en Armand zijn buitenstaanders die hun eigen bestaan onmogelijk maken en er niet in slagen hun leven in handen te nemen. Even precies als een horlogemaker, en met een dosis wrange humor, regisseert Bove hun fijnste gemoedsbewegingen. Met zijn kale, trefzekere staccato zinnetjes en zijn neus voor touchante details boorde hij een heel eigen, nieuwe manier van vertellen aan.

Emmanuel Bove is geboren op 20 april 1898 in Parijs. Hij werd in de jaren 1920 ontdekt door de schrijfster Colette. Hij werd bewonderd door Rainer Maria Rilke en Samuel Beckett, en veertig jaar na zijn dood internationaal gelanceerd door de Oostenrijkse schrijver Peter Handke, die Mijn vrienden en Armand vertaalde. Beide boeken, Boves beste en meest vernieuwende romans, zijn de ideale introductie tot deze unieke auteur. Op 13 juli 1945 overleed hij. slechts 47 jaar oud, in Parijs.

Een onrust die hem uit zijn slaapkamer draagt en in de schoot van z’n vader legt. Deze pakt een wereldbol, wijst aan waar ze nu zijn, Teheran, en trekt dan een sierlijke boog naar een onbekend land, Nederland. Dat is waar vader naartoe zal gaan. Zonder vrouw, zonder het kind. Met het afscheid van de vader vangt er voor het kind een lange reis naar zelfacceptatie aan.

Virtuoos, ongemakkelijk, muzikaal, grappig: een literaire rollercoaster. Vahidi imponeert met zijn gedurfde verhaalopbouw en zijn frisse taal, en trekt de lezer genadeloos zijn verhaal binnen.

Amir Vahidi is geboren in 1990 is schrijver, componist en theatermaker. Hij werkte mee aan meer dan 30 theaterproducties. Uit mij zal je groeien is zijn literaire debuut.
